Easter - Holy Week in Granada

In Granada city there are more than 30 Catholic brotherhoods.

As it stands today, every province proudly announces the number of festivals that have obtained the "Fiesta de Interés Nacional" certification. However, Granada has a special claim to fame in that the Holy Week processions in Granada capital were one of the first in the country to reach such status - and the third in Andalucia (Seville took first place and Málaga second).

Processions take place throughout the province along with Passion Plays as well. There is one more special claim to fame by the provincial capital in that no where else in Andalucia can you experience Semana Santa with the Alhambra in the background.

In Granada city there are more than 30 Catholic brotherhoods and "cofradías" that organise processions and some of the works of art - in the forms of Jesus and Mary - that they carry about the city date back to the 14th century. Later pieces belong to the 16th century.

Villages of special interest in Granada province during Holy Week are Loja and Guadix.
