Divine Destination - Seville

According to legend, Seville was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya by the Moors. Its high point in history followed the discovery of the Americas as its river, the Guadalquivir, flows to the Atlantic, making it an important trade route with the New World.

Seville lies on the banks of this river and is one of the largest historical centres in Europe; it has the minaret of La Giralda, the cathedral, (the largest Gothic church in the world) and the Álcazar Palace. Part of its treasures include the Casa de Pilatos, the Torre del Oro, the Town Hall, the Archive of the Indies, (where the historical records of the American continent are kept), the Fine Arts Museum, (the second largest picture gallery in Spain), plus convents, parish churches and palaces.

Gastronomy

If you’re planning a weekend escape to Seville this month, then we’d recommend a visit to El Rinconcillo. Allegedly the oldest tapas bar in Seville, dating from the 17th century. It certainly feels like nothing's changed in many years, with its flagstone floor and ancient bottles of wine lining the walls. Your bill is written in chalk on the bar in front of you, which is fine as long as nobody spills your drink!

Did you know?

The Roman Amphitheatre, Italica Roman Emperors Born in Italica, Seville.
Italica was the birthplace of three emperors starting with Trajan, (53-117 AD), adoptive father of Hadrian and was one of the earliest Roman settlements in Spain being founded in 206 BC. Interestingly, the flamboyant quarter of Seville, Triana, was later named after Trajan. Italica rose to considerable military importance in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Throughout the Middle Ages, the ruins were used as a source of stone for Seville, but fortunately the amphitheatre has survived, although these days it is crumbling perilously. Beyond this are about twenty mosaics, including an excellent coloured floor with birds, Neptune and the Seasons.
