Driving around La Viñuela area offers the delights of other nearby villages, such as Canillas de Aceituno, which is higher up and offers breathtaking views of the lake. Another picturesque nearby village is that of Alcaucín, where you can see a restored Moorish fountain, La Fuente de San Sebastian, with its beautiful tiles and five spouts of fresh spring water. Alcaucín also has an interesting 16th century church and a hermitage.

The views from this vantage point make the climb more than worth while. Also near the village of Alcaucín are the remains of an ancient Moorish town, Zalia.
Alcaucín
Alcaucin is a village in the province of Málaga in the Axarquía region. It is located at the foot of the Sierra de Tejeda mountains.
The village of Alcaucín itself is beautiful with a lovely square (central plaza) that is home to the Our Lady of the Rosary church, a 17th century building that has been restored. One of the town’s attractions is also found in the lovely historic fountains that you can visit today. Also of special interest are the views of lake Viñuela and the mountains in the distance. The fact that there are no through roads in this town only adds to the charm.
The town of Alcaucín is also the site of many archeological finds including remains of Neanderthal civilisation. There are also remains of the castle.
