It seems that Alcolea del Rio, whose name is derived from an Arabic word meaning small fortification, existed during Phoenician times and was known as Canama. What has been discovered though is that the name Canama was actually given to an archaeological site in the area of La Mesa where several Roman remains and artefacts have been found.
