The land upon which Cantillana is built was inhabited in prehistoric times, but it appears that the town only started to develop into and important commercial centre when the Romans were in charge of the area. Each year the town holds the popular and well-known Fiesta de la Divina Pastora that has been declared of interest to tourists.
