The area of Villanueva del Ariscal, which used to be known as Villanueva Aliscar, has been inhabited for a very long time, but the majority of the ruins that remain there are from the Roman period. During the Arab rule Villanueva del Ariscal was made into an agricultural town and after the Christian reconquest was passed into the hands of the Orden Militar de Santiago.
