Like neighbouring Andalucia, the Algarve region of southern Portugal is popular for year-round holidays, thanks to its mild, sunny climate. Its centrally-situated capital, Faro, is a popular tourist destination, and its airport is the most important in the Algarve, serving the entire region. It is a modern airport with excellent facilities.
Faro airport offers weekly flights to and from many British cities during the winter months, with frequency rising between April and October. But it is also becoming a popular business destination. In fact, Faro is now one of Europe´s leading low-cost hub airports.
In 2008, 5.6 million passengers used Faro airport, making it the Iberian Peninsula´s sixth-most important airport, with over 30 airlines offering flights to more than 60 destinations. The airport is being extended to increase capacity from six to eight million - the 130-million-euro plan is scheduled for completion by 2013.
Faro airport is located 5km west of the city, on the N125.

Buses from the airport to the city centre (EVA Buses, numbers 14 and 16) run from 7am to 8.30pm (7.30pm on weekdays) - turn right outside the Arrivals hall. The buses leave every half hour, and the trip takes around 15 minutes. For further destinations across the Algarve, such as Albufeira, Transol has departures every 45 minutes from 7am to 11.30pm. For more information, check the timetable near the information desk at the meeting point.
Taxis are available outside the terminal building; the fare to central Faro is around 12 euros, Albufeira 40 euros. There is a 20 per cent surcharge for evenings (10pm - 6am) and weekends.
If you want to rent a car, most major international car hire companies, as well as several local ones, have desks in the Arrivals area.
There are three car parks at Faro airport: P1 (Departures) and P3 (Arrivals) are short-term, and P2 is long-term.
The airport has a wide rang of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes; you can eat from 7am to 11pm. There is an information service desk at the meeting point, with cultural and tourist information also available at the ICEP desk in the Arrivals hall. If you need some euros when you get to Faro airport, you´ll find banks and ATMs in both Arrivals and Departures, as well as internet access points, while Arrrivals has a post office and a bureau de change. There´s also a play area for children.
Conference facilities are also available in the airport - up to 65 people can be accommodated, with TV and video.

Car rental travel may be the best form of transportation to Andalucia if you don't have a rigid schedule and are prepared to test your defensive driving skills on Spain's speedy highways. Although a little more expensive than bus travel, car rentals allow the greatest amount of flexibility for sight seeing along the way and visiting many historical, old towns you would have otherwise missed. Have a good trip!
