Seville - Transport

By plane

Seville airport is located about 10 Kilometres north east of the city, on the A4 (was NIV) motorway to Cordoba and Madrid at km 533. more>

By CAR

It is not advisable to drive in Seville as the traffic is terrible and the narrow streets, especially in medieval barrio Santa Cruz, were not designed for cars. Plus it's virtually impossible to find a parking space, and if you're lucky enough to get one, it may be in a restricted or residents' zone and you may get blocked in. There are pay and display areas in some streets and smarter hotels have limited parking spaces for guests, at a charge.

However if you really have to drive in Seville, leave your car in a car park there are several large underground/multi-storey ones around the centre.

  • Calle Sor Angela de la Cruz (near Plaza Encarnacion)
  • Paseo Cristobal Colon (next to the river at Triana bridge)
  • Plaza de Armas (next to the bus station)
  • Plaza de la Concordia (main branch of El Corte Ingles department store)

Please note: Seville is undergoing multiple roadworks at the moment to accommodate a new public transport system, including metro (see below) and tramline. As a result, Plaza Nueva and Avenida de la Constitucion are both closed to all traffic, including cars, buses and taxis, while the lines for the new tram service are laid. All buses which used to leave from and terminate in Plaza Nueva have moved their stops to Puerta de Jerez.

There are two new bus services, both with short but useful routes around the centre. The AC runs on the river side of the city, from Puerta Jerez via Reyes Catolicos to Plaza de la Magdalena, while a new minibus service, BA, offers a shuttle service from Alfalfa to Puerta Carmona via Barrio Santa Cruz - handy if you're lost in the confusingly windy streets of the old quarter, or just exhausted and needing a ride home!

Prices are around one euro per hour.

By BUS

Local buses, run by TUSSAM, are clean, plentiful and fairly regular. Four handy lines are the C1, C2, C3 and C4. The C1 and C2 (Circular Exterior) follow the top of the old city, heading off past Santa Justa train station and through Nervion to the east, and Isla Cartuja to the west. The C3 and C4 (Circular Interior) stick to the edge of the old city (Puertas Carmona, Carne, Jerez, Torre del Oro, Macarena) and then go through Triana.

It costs one euro per trip; alternatively, there are two types of bonobus (ticket with 10 trips): a red one (con transbordo, 5.15 euro), which allows you to change bus lines as many times as you wish within an hour, or green (sin transbordo, 4.20 euro) for single-line trips only. You can get bonobuses from most estancos (tobacco shops), but for the all-important bus map, go to the kiosks in Plaza Nueva and Plaza Encarnacion.

By TAXI

These are white; look for the green light on the roof to indicate it's free. A taxi from the airport will cost around 20 euros. Crossing the city centre from north to south will cost around 5 euro, with excess charges for luggage in the boot and after 10pm.

By HORSE & CARRIAGE

A touristy but fun way to see the main sights, especially Parque Maria Luisa. Especially good for families the driver often lets children sit next to him, and for couples it's quite romantic!

There's a flat fare of 35 euro for one hour; choose your steed next to the cathedral or at Plaza de Espana in Parque Maria Luisa

WALKING

Without any doubt, the best, most atmospheric, enjoyable way to see the city. Just make sure you get a map from the tourist office – many areas, such as Santa Cruz, are very windy, confusing and easy to get lost in. But then, that’s also half the fun!

AVE high speed train

By METRO

The first line (of four), running for 17km from Mairena del Aljarafe to Olivar de Quintos with 23 stations, was originally due to open in summer of 2006. Now likely to be another two years, at least.
