Laguna del Gosque Natural Reserve

Laguna del Gosque Natural Reserve

The seasonal saltwater Laguna del Gosque provides an important back-up for birds in the nearby Laguna de Fuente de la Piedra Natural Reserve. Thousands of flamingos breed in the Fuente de Piedra, so they are also a common sight at this reserve.

Flora
Reeds, reedmace, tamarisk and glasswort grow around virtually the whole of the lake. There is a small amount of the original holm oak woodland left, which has been cleared to make way for cereal cultivation.

Fauna
Flamingos from Fuente de Piedra are frequent visitors, especially if water levels or sources of food are low in Laguna de Fuente de la Piedra. There several species of rare birds here, such as white-headed ducks, red-knobbed coots and ferruginous ducks. In the reedbeds are mallards, gadwalls, red-crested pochards, shovelers and little grebes, while on the short stretch of beach on the lake are waders.
