Traditional Events - month by month - October

Andalucia is filled with fascinating cultural events throughout the year. Whilst many of these festivals take place on the date indicated each year, others move slightly in relation to the day of the week or the religious calendar or occasionally weather.

In order to confirm, the villages town hall website (www.villagename.es) or Facebook page may publish the date or a poster in the few week preceding the festival.

 

 

FERIA DE LA VIRGEN DE LAS NIEVES Y SAN ROQUE

Traditionally 30 September - 2 October,
Torrox, Málaga

First weekend in October, although the actual patron saints' day is on 5 August, but this was considered too hot for a feria.

ROMERIA DEL CRISTO DEL PAÑO

Traditionally 5 October,
Moclin, Granada

Instead of the usual statue, this festival features a painting left in the town by the Reyes Catolicos. The name comes from a miracle a century later involving a sacristan who nearly went blind from cataracts, which were known as "enfermedad del paño". As he was cleaning the painting, he regained his sight.

FERIA Y FIESTAS EN HONOR A NUESTRA SEÑORA LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO

Traditionally 6 - 7 October,
Montoro, Córdoba

Flamenco dancing, bullfights and a special lunch in honour of the senior citizens of the town, concerts and livestock fair are among the attractions of this fiesta.

ROMERIA DEL SUR DE GRANADA AND FIESTAS DE LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO

Traditionally 6 - 9 October,
Salobreña, Granada

Pilgrimage takes place on either the first or second Sunday of October, fiestas in first week of the month. The romeria's arrival point is the Playa del Peñon in Salobreña, with a mass on the Paseo Maritimo, while the fiestas feature flamenco, food tastings, horse demonstrations, a float competition, and a night-time procession on the final day.

FERIA Y FIESTAS DE LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO

Traditionally 6 - 12 October,
Fuengirola, Málaga

With 32 peñas, this feria offers a wide range of activities, as well as performances in the Palacio de la Paz.

FIESTA DE LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO CORONADA

Traditionally 7 October,
Rota, Cádiz

Dating from the 16th century, with parades, fireworks and carnival figures - the patron saint's procession is on 7 October.

MERCADO Y FIESTA MEDIEVAL VISIGODA "VILLA TORRE DE DON XIMENO"

Traditionally 7 - 10 October,
Torredonjimeno, Jaen

The townsfolk dress up and medieval food is served. Storytelling, street theatre and children's activities.

FERIA: FIESTAS EN HONOR A LA VIRGEN DE LAS ANGUSTIAS Y SAN MIGUEL ANGEL

Traditionally 8 - 12 October,
Nerja, Málaga

You can see a flamenco singing festival, folkloric performances, dancing competitions and carriage processions. Three Reinas de la Fiesta are elected - child, youth and elderly - as well as Mr and Miss Nerja beauty pageant.

ROMERIA DE LA VIRGEN DE LA LUNA

Traditionally 9 October,
Villanueva de Córdoba, Córdoba

Second Sunday in October. The statue of the Virgen de la Luna is taken to her sanctuary, where she stays until the following February.

DIA SAN DIONISIO

Traditionally 9 October,
Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz

San Dionisio Areopagita was named the city's patron saint by Rey Alfonso X El Sabio after he recaptured the city from the Moors on 9 October 1264.

DIA SAN DIONISIO

Traditionally 12 October,
Santa Fe, Granada

Anniversary of the discovery of America, also celebrated on 12 October throughout Spain.

FIESTAS DE SAN LUCAS

Traditionally 14 - 23 October,
Jaen

The feria of Jaen province's capital city, with local food tastings during the daytime feria, and dancing at night, as well as bullfights and concerts.

ROMERIA DE LA VIRGEN DE VALME

Traditionally 16 October,
Dos Hermanas, Sevilla

Third Sunday in October. The Virgin is taken from parish church in Dos Hermanas, Santa Maria Magdalena, to her ermita in the Cortijo del Cuarto, in Bellavista, a barrio in the south of Sevilla city. One of Andalucia's most popular romerias.

FIESTAS DE SANTA MARIA SALOME

Traditionally 21 - 25 October,
Bonares, Huelva

The patron saint of Bonares is taken through the streets, with music, dancing and children's activities.

HALLOWEEN

31 October

Halloween is a new celebration and hasn’t caught on everywhere in Andalucia, but it is growing in very fast. Halloween parties are popular on the Costa del Sol and some children even go “trick or treating”.
