Re: Barcelona safe - yes or no?

^^^ In light of their declaration of independence, I intend to avoid Barcelona & the rest of Catalunya as much as possible, even do not want to use their airport. Additionally I've been hearing the city has become a huge tourist trap.

Re: Spain isnt cheap

As Americans, we find practically everything in Spain significantly cheaper than California prices. Perhaps OP is shopping in the wrong place?

Re: Non Resident Bank account

We were hit with charges of up to 15 euros to withdraw cash at an ATM from our LaCaixa account while travelling in Greece. That said, la Caixa has been alright although they do assess quarterly fees of about 5 euros on our non-residents account. Originally we had Barclay's, which did not assess any ...

Anybody know where we could acquire some of those hand-painted rush-bottomed wood chairs favored by flamenco performers? Anywhere in the south ... we're stumped.

Re: Recommendation Sanlúcar de Barrameda

We wandered into a small local bar/bodega and sampled some Manzanilla ... ended up with a bottle or two of some of the best I've had ... superior to La Guita or La Gitana for sure.

Re: Norwegian Air

Have been flying them for a few years now since they started service to the USA. We do California non-stop to Gatwick and then change planes to get to Madrid or Malaga. The main drawback is a long layover at Gatwick but that at least includes a crack at a pint of ale. Service can be spotty but have ...

Re: Barcelona safe - yes or no?

I beg to differ. I had a knife held to my throat just about 30 meters off the Ramblas, while admiring a shoeshop window. Barcelona is well-known for pickpockets and scammers ("the mustard trick") who target tourists and those obviously from outside the area. A friend had their vehicle pick...

If you're concerned about cold/rain for February in Sevilla, be sure to check that your accommodations have heat. Many do not.

Re: bus faro/sevilla

You're pretty much right. In general, San Sebastian station serves lines going south from Sevilla, close distances. Plaza de Armas has longer-distance, express routes to the north and Huelva, also routes to other countries. But best to check on the bus company's website. There are city buses that ru...

Re: On a Scale of 1 to 10 how high would you rate living in Andalucia??

We are Americans who bought in Cadiz old town about 5 years ago. We are not residents but usually stay a minimum of 2 months per year and try to visit twice per year. Have never had problems with electricity or water being out ... the bureaucracy has been minimal and quick to correct errors (for exa...

Re: buying beds and bedding

We bought quite a lot of furnishings from Ikea including beds, which were the largest part of the $3000 U.S. we spent. Very happy with the Ikea beds although putting together the frame with its suspension was a bit of a challenge. As time went on (it's been 5 years now) we did regret some of the pie...

Has anybody tried "Mundo"? They have a pre-paid SIM card with 2 GB for 9 euros IF you can use your smartphone as a "hot spot". I used them for very economical voice access but not yet for Internet.

I would agree that these brokers are quite sneaky. I will only deal direct with the car rental company.

Re: Spanish attitude to guiris & vice versa - chicken or egg?

hola Lavanda, we have an atico in Cadiz old town, 5 years now. Quite a journey from California, we usually go thru Gatwick now, as there's only one non-stop per week from California to Madrid. There are a couple American owners in Cadiz, I don't think more than 10. Have been all over Spain! the Gadi...

Re: Spanish attitude to guiris & vice versa - chicken or egg?

I do believe the more crowded the area with ex-pats, the more perfunctory treatment those ex-pats will receive from the locals. We've run into very few cantankerous Spainards in Cadiz but have been on the receiving end of some rude comments/actions many times over in the Costa del Sol. No doubt the ...

Sorry I missed this. Huge public parking garage underground at one end of the Parque Genoves (the other end is the parador, Hotel Atlantico). Goes for 18 euros per 24 hours.

I have messed around with the "discount" car rental companies and been cheated more than once. I try to stick with Hertz, if you apply for their loyalty program you can get the rate down and they are much less likely to ding you with unanticipated charges.
