Re: after the Greeks ...
It's a very good article, Irene. I read it on the day and there are others like it coming thick and fast.
I used to be a big fan of the EU and I voted to go in all those years ago. I was 18 and it was my first ever vote. I have gradually been getting disenchanted and worried. The EU is not run on accountable lines. The citizens (and in our case, subjects) do not matter, have almost no say and when we do say something we are ignored or dismissed. It cannot go on in the present way, can it? I'm hoping this Greece situation will raise the questions that need to be asked and I'm hoping they will not go away until they are answered.

We ceased being anything.
hence my comment about the rest of us(taxpayers) in the Eurozone being asked in a referendum whether we want to keep Greece alive or cast them free.

Seems I'm now something called a 'bearer', Mowser. Isn't that someone who carries around nobs in litters through jungles? Or, to tie in Olive's post, someone who carries around Greeks through euroland.

Lavanda, thinking about your other thread, shouldn't that be "beerer"Lavanda wrote:Seems I'm now something called a 'bearer'

It's hard to argue with that. The amount of cheering and clapping was surprising. It seems that Farage is no longer a lone voice crying out in the wilderness.
Re: after the Greeks ...
Almost over bar the photoshoots, we are going to have to put this thread to bed for a few months Just in time for everyone on the gravy train to go on summer holidays.
How will merkel keep France, Italy and Spain on budget Greece has lit the touch paper.

Re: after the Greeks ...
Agreed, Katy! We may be coming back to this thread in the Autumn when Spain goes to the polls or much sooner once the Greeks work out that they are about to borrow more billions and, even with 'debt relief' they will soon be worse off than they are right now. The Greeks should have cut and run, in my opinion.
Re: after the Greeks ...
Agree Lavanda, it can't work. I see another Greek election too.
Re: after the Greeks ...
It is like an LP that has suddenly jumped to a different track.
The Greek government kept saying no to conditions, had a referendum where the vote was firmly in favour of a firm stance...then suddenly raise VAT, pension reforms privatisations can we have the money (bailout) please?
Maybe it is the fact that their banks will collapse without some serious support, not just ECB liquidity support, very soon.
I worked out that every man women and child in Greece currently owes 28,000 euros. Only 20,000 each after a haircut!

Debt per UK citizen is £ 25.007
Debt per UK taxpayer is £ 43.013
The difference is that the UK can service the debt.

Re: after the Greeks ...
... but think how rich the UK would be if it were not in debt. Think what sort of a world power it could be with all that extra money. Not only education and health care for all but also well-funded armed forces to fight the good fight that is coming to a place nearby soon ... And what happens if there is an unforeseen disaster and the UK, suddenly, cannot service it's debt? What if it votes to leave the EU and all the IOUs come rolling in at once ... Debt is NOT a good idea.
Re: after the Greeks ...
Look upon it as a long-term mortgage. Every country has debt. Every country borrows to the hilt.Debt is NOT a good idea.
US debt is about $16 trillion
Have a look at http://www.nationaldebtclocks.org/#countries and pick a country.

Re: after the Greeks ...
Yes! Every country seems to borrow from every other country. Would it not be a better idea for countries to use their own money and not to lend it out thereby necessitating them to borrow in turn?
