Medical cover in UK.

Postby peteroldracer » Sun Apr 28, 2019 11:23 am

I am resident in Spain and on their health system using the S1 form. I will be spending longer periods in the uk, and have been trying to find out how I can get NHS healthcare, and importantly prescription medicines like insulin. We will not have a residential address there, just a holiday static caravan on a non-residential site.
Anyone know what the system is?

As an S1 pensioner living in Spain, you have the right to full NHS treatment at any time. In theory you can fly over for the day for treatment (assuming you have an appointment). Otherwise, go to the nearest GP and start from there.

It used to be that you had to return permanently to get back into the system. It changed in 2015.

I have read about some GP practices thinking the rules were different....what a surprise! Next visit we will call at the practice near where a granddaughter lives (where we will stay until we ‘activate’ our static) and see what reaction we get...I will try to get as much medicine as I can to take. It will be interesting to see what a pharmacy does about charging, and how they react to a Spanish prescription - I don’t hold out much hope of my GP here giving me a European prescription!

If you are over 60 prescriptions are free in the UK.
