Does anyone know where to buy fresh, free range turkeys for Christmas ? Anywhere in the Axarquia if possible.

Not really a Spanish thing but Iceland in Fuengirola may be your best chance but obviously out of your area. You could call them first as they all speak english. There fresh meat counter is very good.

Try a traditional local butcher to order one. The sort of butcher that sells goat meat seasonally.

A word of caution. All the turkeys here are a large breed and dress out circa 17 or 18 kg. Our Spanish friends portion and process their whole birds.

I have had no trouble getting fresh turkeys around 6-7kg from our local butcher. I don't know if they are free range but they taste as good as any I have had in the UK - and they are half the price!

Sid, they will be like the ones Mercadona sell at Xmas. Quite nice tasting and small enough to get in an oven too.

If you're anywhere near Torrox costa you could pop into Russels British food shop at the top of Calle Faro !

The Spanish butchers in Puente Don Manuel sells fresh turkeys, again not sure if they are free range. They are very nice, if a bit on the large size.

I would say that 90% of spanish butchers sell Pavo at christmas - the ones in iceland are so ridiculously overpriced its unreal.
