Western Union
Western Union
I am being sent some money via Western Union and need to collect it from one of their offices.
Anybody know an Western Union Office between Nerja and Malaga where I can actually collect the cash.
Looked at their website and there seems to be plenty but went to my nearest in Velez Malaga and got a blank look, a shrug and a "no". Went to Correos in Rincon and they can only send money, same with a travel agent in Rincon.
I need to receive the money in person.
I have an ICI pension which is paid into my Spanish bank account but the pension providers want proof I am still alive.
So they have sent me 10GBp which I have to collect, in person, along with some photo id, from a Western Union office to prove that I am still alive.
If I don't do this by 31st January they will suspend pension payments.
Cheers

Re: Western Union
Try using this locator. You can tick a box to specify that you want to pick up money:

Re: Western Union
Gerry,
Are you sure that this is legit ?
Seems a very strange way of a big company dealing with this issue. ?
Be Careful,

Gordon

Re: Western Union
Yes I used the locator and ticked the pick up money but none of the three I have so far tried allowed me to pick up money as I said in my post.Beachcomber wrote:Try using this locator. You can tick a box to specify that you want to pick up money:

If it worked it would be a good way of them getting proof I am still alive and the 10GBP is in compensation of my time and effort of going to a Western Union Office.

Re: Western Union
Perhaps you could try their helpline on 900633633. It looks as though there are actual Western Union offices in Almería, Cordoba and Seville but not Málaga.
If you have to go to one of those £10 is not going to be much compensation.

Re: Western Union
Gerry,
Can I suggest that you speak with your receiving bank in Spain they can do the same as Western Union and easier , tell ICI that it's very difficult for you to attend a Western Union office, they could suspend your pension but not stop it...

Re: Western Union
I know of a few in Malaga city. Definatley one on Alameda Principal thats also a money exchange. Park in La Cala or Rincon and jump on the 160. 3 minute walk from bus stop.
Re: Western Union
Just got from trying another one in Torre del Mar.
According the the locator it was "open now".
Certainly open, a totally empty space, no walls just pillars supporting the roof.
Yes Gordon I will be contacting my pension provider with as full account of the problems with their system to verify I'm sill alive.
Costakid do you know for a fact that I can collect money from the Malaga ones?
I know the locator says I can but given my experiences so far I don't trust or believe what the locator says.
Cheers

Re: Western Union
My OH had exactly the same thing from his pension provider. He went to the Torrox pueblo PO and picked it up OK. He had previously tried one of the Locutario places that deals with Western Union but they would not accept the electricity bill as proof of address for some reason.
Re: Western Union
A visit to Torrox pueblo PO might be my next attempt.
Hopefully nobody ever asks for proof of address as living in the campo I have some strange addresses used by Electricity, telephone companies etc on their paperwork. None of which are the same as my accepted postal address.

Re: Western Union
never used a WU in Spain but the one on the Alameda is always busy. If you dont get sorted jump on the bus into Malaga and see the lights at the same time. It is never an ordeal for me to go into Malaga.
Re: Western Union
This was the problem. The electricity bill is addressed to the apartado but then the house is shown as the campo address where the supply is. I don't think it was a problem at the Torrox PO but then it may depend on who serves you! The PO were happy with just his passport for ID.gerryh wrote:A visit to Torrox pueblo PO might be my next attempt.

Re: Western Union
According to the letter I received proof of address is not needed. Just photo ID such as passport.
All of my utility bills and bank statements etc. are received online.
I receive very little letter post.

Re: Western Union
I think my OH's must have asked for a utility bill as we wouldn't usually take that but in the end she only looked at his passport. Good luck!
Re: Western Union
We have had a few of these requests over the years from occupational and private pensions. All standard format where a side of A4 to fill in and have to be countersigned by a Doctor, Civil Servant etc.
I always think of Western Union as the first choice of scammers.

Re: Western Union
Same here. Gestor just signed and stamped
Re: Western Union
We thought it odd when we got the letter but it was legit. They paid us 10GPB which was just over 11€ so worth the trip to the post office!
Re: Western Union
Just got back from the Correos in Nerja as I had to go to my bank in Nerja.
Long queue as usual but no problem with the Western Union transfer.
They confirmed that Correos in Rincon should have done it. Obviously the person I saw behind the counter couldn't be bothered.
I am now €11.45 richer, except for the fuel I used on multiple wasted trips.
Cheers
