Is free Spanish state health cover available to European immigrants living full time in Andalucia and who are under the state retirement age and not contributing to the Spanish system.

free health cover

We've spoken to DSS about this because my husband has chronic illness which private insurers won't cover.

The length of time you get free cover (below state retirement age when you will get it) depends on how much national insurance you've paid in a tax year. We originally intended moving out in March 2006. We would have cover until December 2007. However, if one of us earns minimum £4,400 in tax year 2006/7, we will get cover until December 2008. There doesn't seem to be much of a sliding scale, but earning £4,400 entitles you to a full year's cover. So we're staying in UK another couple of months.

Hope this helps. People at DSS very helpful about this

Hi bongtrees

Check out www.ukgovabusesexpats.co.uk (click on Europe & Health care in EU.)

I followed the information given and although it took a lot of time and number of visits to various health centres/social security offices, I now have a Spanish health card.
