Hi All, my very first Post

Do you have a query on how to get things done in Andalucia, where to find things, who to call? Find out by posting and hear about others experiences.

Hi All, my very first Post

Postby Annabell » Wed Sep 21, 2005 9:49 am

Just wanted to say hi to everybody. This is my very first posting as we've been pondering on moving to Spain for a while and have finally decided to take the plunge.
We are from London but have been living in France now for nearly two years. We've had a nice time here but the winters are so cold and to be honest its pretty boring.
We've sold our house in London and will be starting our search soon around the Chiclana area of the Costa de la Luz.
Any advice greatly appreciated, is there anybody out there around this area. What are the chances of employmet? Hubby is an electrician / builder by trade and I have been selling houses in France to English clients.

Welcome to the forum :) I hope you find what you are looking for, just make sure you spend some time visiting your intended area and speak to people there about the issues you raise. Winters can be chilly, but it will depend on your house, so make sure you buy one that will deal with anything from freezing to 40 degrees. Employment can be tricky - best to look around the area you want to live in and see for yourself. And recreation is entirely up to you - there's plenty of ferias and fiestas, and there are lots of nice places to visit. I am sure you will find plenty to do.
Take a look through some of the past postings on this forum - most topics have been discussed at length at some time or another.
Slainte,

Hi annabell welcome
What are the chances of employmet?
If you read some old post you will find that this is not the best place to work electrician / builder by trade but if you are good at selling houses there are always agents jobs around on commision basis and you would be first hand to get reform jobs from those who buy and need these services.
Chiclana area of the Costa de la Luz. is not the costa del sol and can be a lot colder due to the atlantic winds...it is very windy..if you dont like wind ..keep looking..a lot claim it make people go mad..but good if you surf and the beaches nice.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, we know about the wind, but thats something we're used to and we prefer it like that as it keeps the heat at bay.
We're not going to jump into anything, we're going to do our research first and also have a friend thats already bought there so we're getting some sound advice from them too.
Just need to crack the language now, we managed to learn French in the time that we've been here so are determined.
Thanks again

If you can speak French then Spanish is gonna be a piece of cake.

Funny enough, someone else told us that, and to be honest, from what i've seen so far it seems pretty similar.
We've learnt a little so far, so fingers crossed.

We were in the Cadiz province briefly this summer and are returning in October to further explore/research whether it will be the area for us. We found the Chiclana area to be a bit on the busy side. We stayed overnight in Medina Sidonia, and made some flying visits to Arcos and Vejer (staying in Vejer in October). The area in general is very pretty and as to be expected in August quite busy along the coast. We intend to move over in the first quarter of 2006 (if our visit in October goes well) and will rent for 6 to 12 months. We have a few business ideas but need to be there to investigate them properly. Also need to find schools for our two children.

It's cooler in the summer than the Costa del Sol but not as cold in the winter. Friends who have moved down from CDS say it's far less oppressive here. How windy it is depends on how exposed your house is and the trouble is that a lot of the new builds have sprouted up with little attention to aspect. The older properties were built with the wind in mind and a breeze can be lovely in summer. When people speak of winters below 0 degrees and summers in the 40s it's hard to imagine that we live in the same country!

What are the chances of employment?
Answering your post, I would say that until you learnt Spanish the chances of finding work as an estate agent were very unlikely around Chiclana. As an electrician your hubby stands more chance but it would be serving the English sector and prices would have to be competitive as they are not as wealthy as on the CDS. If he is prepared to work hard and offer a good service at a reasonable price he will by word of mouth gain work. But he will have to prove himself better than the numerous fly by nights here that usually after 6 months return home penniless. Chiclana is a small world and you have to build up a reputation to succeed. Getting your foot in is the difficult thing but achievable.
