Obra kitchen units

Postby Kelly4 » Mon May 08, 2006 11:34 pm

hello

I have been searching for an old thread about how to build an 'obra' kitchen. I seem to remember Hillybilly building one of her own? Can't find the thread anywhere.

Anyone offer any advice/a good link about how to do this? We're basic DIY-ers so we need a bit of an idiot's guide.

Thank you,

Kelly

HI

You have me curious..what is an OBRA kitchen? I have "dogpilled" it and found absolutely nothing? It has me very curious as we are going to redo our kitchen here (eventually) and am looking for ideas.

It's just a self-built, Spanish "style" (ie basic!) kitchen. Mine is brickwork piers with the shelves (removable) and worktop made from rasillones which are subsequently tiled. Oh and beautiful blue gingham curtains beneath  That's all folks!

Mmm I kinda cheated a bit with my kitchen, it is an external addition to my cueva but I did not want it to look too modern or out of place with the rest of the cueva so I bought new units when I left mucia, rough rendered the walls and ceilings and I am putting facing bricks between the units and below as kick boards.
rasillones
sorry to appear a bit thick here but what is that?

Hillybilly

How strong are the rasillones? The obra units my mum had made came with a warning that we shouldn't put any heavy pots on them...or sit on them. We want to make ours a bit stronger (because we KNOW our kids will climb up on them to reach things).

And how complicated a DIY job is it? I'm very handy with wood (made our kitchen in the UK) but I've never laid a brick in my life. Any ideas where to find a step-by-step guide?

Cheers,

Kelly

Rasillones are used in roof construction - you can walk on them. If a rasillone can take my weight then it sure as hell can take a cooking pot!

Just to prove my kitchen exists and how simple it is to build:

Kitchen & curtains by Hillybilly, wall units by IKEA (bathroom dept), sink from skip, olive oil from Oleoestepa...

I'll av u kno I sweated blood n tears over those bluddy things. I borrowed a friend's miniscule electric sewing machine which required the aid of a magnifying glass just to find it never mind thread the thing. Never again!

Now that I know what Obra Kitchen means I know i saw many while house hunting. Not quite what I ended up with but will have part of my shelving units in that style.

Doh!!!...... the large orange tiles we call them borders and they sit between the vigas. we used the concrete ones specially shaped for the job. Thanks now I know what you are talking about

We are just in the middle of our kitchen so I will post a pic or a link when we are finished see what people think. :D
