log burner chimney through wall question

Postby olive » Sat Jun 03, 2006 6:17 pm

I am putting in another log burner for the coming winter.

To get to the metal lined chimney flue I intend running 15 cm metal tubing vertically up (about a metre) from the log burner then going through the room wall at 45 degrees before putting the tubing up the first floor chimney with a second 45 degree bend.

My question is - Where I go through the lounge wall does that need a metal sleeve i.e. an air gap or is there some sort of heat resistant plaster that can be used to stop masses of cracking? I can live with some cracking. Any suggestions!

You can use heat resistant mortar which is called mortero refractario where it passes through the wall. Nice and black in colour.

:( If it's a stone and clay wall I shouldn't worry at all...what's to burn? Provided there are no joists in the proximity it will only add expense for no reason :?

I agree with Country Boy. I have done exactly this with a 150mm. pipe through a clay brick wall and just cemented the flue in with no problem and no cracking, at least so far. However the vertical run before the first bend is three metres.

Thanks for the replies. As ever a mine of information.

It is a stone and clay wall , no wood nearby. No worries.
