Reservior Levels

Postby jane grant » Wed Oct 18, 2006 6:05 pm

This has probably all been said before but and too tired (after a middle of the night airport run to search properly) but we spent the day yesterday going roung the embalsas at Guadaltebe, and we amazed to see just how empty they really are. It was raining at the time, but we felt it would take at least a year of rain like we had yesterday to make any impression on them - some were completely empty, the only one with any appreciable amount of water in was El Chorro (probably tp do with the hydro electric thingy there). Definately time for the bricks in the cistern and sharing a shower with a firiend!

According to the news this morning the average is 28% which means some are much lower than this, not looking good.

The last time the reservoirs were this low was 1995. By the Spring of 1996 they were overflowing and couldn't cope with the volume of water.

Let's hope the same thing happens again otherwise the doomsday scenario of desertification is likely to become a reality.

It said on the news yesterday that studies had revealed that Andalucia has a 10 year drought cycle... but the real reason for the lack of water is cause by population increase and that more reservoirs are needed.

I don't think things will get any better with general reservoir levels for two reasons.

1. golf courses and holiday home developments
2. people taking ever more water out of the ground via legal or illegal bore holes for irrigation to make up for the EU grants going off crops like olives (To pay for the East Europeans).

Our local newspaper said we are in the worst drought since records began in the 1940's.

unfortunately there are people in high government positions who, because they want golf courses and residential areas each with individual swimming pool (talking about Antequera area) will not say anything about drought or even admit there is a shortage of water. :(
I used to be indecisive but now I´m not so sure.

Its raining heavily here just now which is good, the perfume in the campo is lovely :) Unfortunate that we have our Grandson here from paris and he is disappointed as I said (truthfully) that we were swimming at the weekend. Because of all the developments and the projected ones I don't think there will ever be enough water here.

We have a supply of canal water for part of the year to our casa don't know what the quality of water is.
Would you normally use this supply for irrigation or other purposes?Excuse my ignorance on his matter.

This water is only suitable for irrigation purposes. It runs through open channels and can pick all kinds of nasties on its journey.
