Morrisons/food encased in paper/cardboard!!!!

Just a word of warning really.

I bought a box of 12 OXOs on Sunday morning from Morrisons,got home opened the packaging to get a few oxos out to use for sunday dinner and the whole box inside was crawling with lice thingys.thousands of them.

So if you are going to buy any food products from there that are wrapped in boxes/paper,chuck it out as soon as you get home.

Oh i worry about everything Julian...lol..i think my eyesights too good..i see absolutley everything in food that shouldnt be there,worms in fish,lice in oxos,meat in sauce...lol...

Had the same thing a couple of weeks ago both with oxos and rice and the babies cheerios I had bought from Morrisons I had to throw out loads of stuff in the cupboard ,that had become infected . At the time i suspected it had come from the Morrison bought stuff but could not really prove it.

PPs problem with the OXO has to be down to Morrisons but there are other problems lurking in your cupboards.

We have had some problems with finding maggots in cereals and other grain products. It seems it is caused by a moth that lays its eggs near food or in food boxes and when the larvae hatch out they eat the food.

The eggs may come into the house on the boxes or even inside the package having been laid in the original grain before it was packed - often thousands of miles away.

When we were living on a boat cruising we would never allow any type of paper bag or cardboard box on board at that is often where cockroach eggs are laid - apparently the little critters like eating the glue when they hatch out!

You posted some time ago that you had a similar problem........once unlucky......twice ...would go along with "The Cid", could be an in-house problem..............so early spring clean
Guess Morrisons will be going the way of Ryan Air, every hates them, but still uses them

yes Enrique,I did have the problem a while ago,i had lice on my lasagne sheets
i will check and clean my cupboards out,but i know the oxo lice came from morrisons as did the box of easy cook rice that were also riddled with them,they werent in my cupboard long enough from supermarket to home to have hatched out so many full grown ones,i presume the baby ones are white in colour and not brownish...eergh!

Might be worth seeing the Manager next time you go to Morrisons, might even get some good will replacements.

thanks Peachy, you should of posted this yesturday, we been to that bloody shop TODAY,i don't know what sh'es bought, and she's asleep, must check,if not to later, tomorrow,mind you we didn't buy much, the bloody shop was half of the stock that it nomally has,did get some nice Kippers and Haddock that had just arrived, not un packed, but was in bloody boxes??looks like plenty of work going on ,on the rock?

Oh God Ken...Im sure it will all be lice free,dont worry.... Its probably me thats infested..
I dont think it affects food that has to be kept in the fridge,just the ones stored dry in cupboards.Im going to have to google these little critters and see what comes up..cant for the life of me remember what they are called tho....Ah..just got it....Rice weevils..

OMGNow why did i google that..im now itchy as f@*k and dont want to go into the kitchen cupboards let alone eat anything from them...my creepies arent that big...they are tiny little lice thingys,like head lice,they are all over paper substances...now im wondering if i have something else..
I would take a picture,but they are too tiny to see on camera.


think i might take a trip to the bazzar and go and buy a bulk load of air tight containers,that way,ill know for definate that they are either contained in the container or they wont get in if they aint already... Oh bloody ell!

This is Kens wife, now with this problem you have with weevil's, there are several kind and it
is not Morrison's fault or any other shops fault. From harvesting to the shop floor is the problem.
remember these products have to travel from being harvest to storage, to the factory for packaging, to the wholesaler, to the retailer, now how many kinds of temp have they been through???? damp, heat. ect. from country to country. hence they have a good breeding ground.

I have suffered many a time with them in flour, in fact only a few weeks ago, bloody annoying
especially when you are just about to use it. I have thrown many a good box out with them. Now
Kens cousin had them in his rice. to destroy you should put them in the micro was and blitz for 3 to 4 mins on high power or burn them so as to stop them travelling around once in dustbin.

I have now brought glass jars with tight seal lids hoping this will stop the little critter from breeding
in my house again. Fay

Thanks ever so much for taking the time to type to me.
I feel a bit better after that..the only thing is,i had a new microwave that was taking up storage.I never used it so i binned it about 3 months ago
I think i will just give my cupboards a good clean out,check everything and in future put everything into sealed containers.
yes it is annoying when you have one bag of flour,you open it to use and it all has to be thrown away.
I have lived here 6 years and only seemed to notice this problem since moving into my house 2.5 years ago...

Much the same here, as regard hotels etc. We have been looking for weekends in UK, and loads of decent hotels seem full, and/or are charging big money. Even B&B's (decent ones) are charging around £65 a night.
I've just about given up trying to find a good deal. In the past laterooms, lastminute etc were doing loads of deals, not anymore it seems. The crisis has been good for some.

I'm sorry to say we have them in our house here in Cheshire - I can't find where they're coming from, so like Fay, have to put flour / pasta/ dried goods in sealable containers. There seems to be less of them at the moment - maybe they're not keen on the cold weather...

I have now de gunged all my food cupboards and found the source of the problem
It was a packet of unopened Barley mix(still in date)riddled with the critters.
Its really wierd,after sorting out all the packets and dried food,they seem to be mostly in Morrisons food stuff.The spanish items hardly had anything on/in them.
I also found something that resembled a moth,that had laid its eggs in my half a packet of indate breadcrumbs,(sealed with a bag seal) and there was actually a maggot in there crawling about.YUK!!!

Previously my sugar canister was also crawling with lice,so now thats stored in an airtight container.
I think ill just seal the whole kitchen up!

You can easily spot the larvae (maggots) but the eggs are the problem. Follow the guides on that site and freeze the packs to kill the eggs.

Yes sid,i would say you are correct with the moth/maggot in the breadcrumbs.but after looking at chrissies link regarding rice weevils..my critters didnt look at all like those,they are like tiny lice.Unless they are baby rice weevils.The only thing i have ever seen full grown rice weevils in are bird seed purchased from a big pet warehouse(Agro hens) here in La Linea trading est.

I have had moths in the cupboard in Spain. At first I didn't realise as just the odd one flew out when I opened it. Culprit was a packet of stuffing mix, so very similar to breadcrumbs. I keep everything in containers now, flour, cereal etc.
