"Food" at Malaga Airport

Postby Pauly on Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:45 am

I'd like to nominate this as one of the world's worst eating experiences and to add insult to injury - at rip-off prices. We have been several times and it's always rubbish and we swear not to use it 'next time'. Recently we were so hungry we had no choice. We selected what looked to be the least objectionable stuff on the menu - slice of pizza, burger and fries and a bottle of water - E18!!
Then it was so horrible -even though we were so hungry - we couldn't finish it. Their monopoly position lets them get away with it. Disgusting.

There is a cafeteria just across the footbridge near the entrance to the railway station. I have never eaten there but it can't be any worse than the places inside the terminal building.

And the sparrows flying around the eaterie really add ambience - probably tastier (and cheaper) to grab one.....

I'm not being funny but what you've said there makes me feel ill  .....I won't even take a butty to the airport whilst they're fluttering around.

What I do is have some toast or whatever is left over before it gets chucked in the bazura before we set off and then wait a few hours.

Then the prize is Monarchs "finest breast of corn fed chicken cooked in its own jus, straddling a bed of hand pulped fragranced mash, with a fricasse of garden grown, quick blanched French beans".....food fit for a king 8)

I have to agree with the first post here. But it is consistent (always the same :P ). If we are travelling from malaga between 11.30 am & 8.30pm we use the burgerking in the check in area. To make sure you get hot fresh (if thats possible) fast food we order a "non standard" burger. So a burger with extra onion or no onion and extra pickle. The result is your order is prepared there and then. Not a great choice but better than upstairs. I only hope and pray that they have a food hall in the new terminal.

TBH I don't feel the need to eat much when travelling. I see people in every airport stuffing their faces and many will only have travelled about 30 mins or so. Gatwick has some very good places now and decent prices. I travelled 1st class with Emirates recently (a freebie) and the food was awful. Was also in Madrid in Feb and delayed all day (thanks Iberia  ) given a voucher, the meal of the day was 20 euro and I had to leave it was making me feel sick. Most I buy is a coffee or water.

Next time you go to Malaga airport go through security and turn left towards the old terminal, there is a sandwich bar there thats brilliant. Not expensive either and they have a fresh food policy so nothing sits for ever. Gate B.

When the new terminal opens there will be a host of other choices for eating. In fact several of them are international chains, so not spanish. If the current cafe/bar still have their own eatery in the new terminal, they will have plenty of competition.

OK so it's a common occurence - so we should just accept it Griff?

Part of the problem is that because security takes so long you've got to get airside much earlier and the opportunity to use other places landside is much less than it used to be. I'll try costakid's sandwich bar next time - or prepare properly and take some home made stuff. Perhaps a sparrow and goldfish paella

Sorry for the abrupt reply earlier. Waiting in for a courier only to see the van turn into the driveway, stop for 0.2 seconds, reverse and drive off with me chasing him up the road does that to a person.

Back on topic no people shouldn't accept it but I guess the reason these places get away with poor food and high prices is merely down to economics on their part. If the money comes in they don't care.

Perhaps (and I know this isn't always possible, especially with kids) people simply refused to buy food and/or drink at the airport then they'd be forced to up their game and lower prices.

As others have alluded to once the new terminal opens hopefully things will change for the better.

Does anybody know when the new terminal is scheduled to open?
Does anybody know when it will actually open?

Katy

We also flew 1st class recently with Emirates (got a great deal on Expedia). Some of the food was good, some not. On one leg I had the best breakfast I have ever had on a flight, but on the return the scrambled egg was vastly overdone (turning black). But, it was still better than any meal I have ever had in economy (apart from that egg).

At the end of the day, airline food is all reheated so what do we expect?

On the other hand, the wine was nice (whatever it was) and plentiful. Also on the up side, the bar and the shower on the Airbus A380 made a refreshing change. Also couldn't fault the service by the cabin crew, and the seat/bed was comfortable, and a 23" TV!

All changed when we got to Gatwick and had to suffer Aer Lingus to Malaga. Not that they were bad, but comparatively speaking ............. And that is where the Andalucia connection comes in. To go anywhere long haul you have to go to another airport in Europe to get the long haul flight, apart from the odd flight to US. If going to Asia, Australasia etc you have to go first to London, Amsterdam, Milan etc. I assume it is because the Spanish don't go to these places but once I have completed a long haul flight the last thing I need is an onward flight on a budget airline.

The problem is that when taking a connecting budget flight for long haul is 2 suitcases each free but the budget flight charges for them all :( The only USA flight out of Málaga stopped in Oct. was expensive anyway. The 7.30am Iberia flight from Málaga to Madridis virtually a feeder flight for AA.

Yes, I would like to do 1st on all long haul. Would never pay for it myself though

Going from an allowance of 60kgs each, mas or menos, to 20kgs is tricky.

I agree that the food upstairs is overpriced. I sometimes have a couple of hours to kill at Malaga airport when someone gives me a lift. I go to the little restaurant to the left of Burger King, through the Spanish style cafeteria. It is bright, nice and quiet in there and the service is very good. I can make the home made salmorejo and fresh house salad that they do there last ages and they are rarely busy so they don't hassle you to leave. Cost for 2 courses and a drink about 15 Euros. I suspect that this little enclave will disappear when the international fooderies come -in so use it while you can...

I agree with Beach.
The restaurant near the train station is ideal if you have time to kill. Get checked in and hold bags deposited and then wander back across the footbridge.
Tapas or a full meal.......used by workers in the area.
