Milky coffee
Milky coffee
Anyone an expert on Andalucian coffee. Not talking the ghastly Costa offerings but the standard cafe con leche for around 1.20 . On our travels around Andalucia we find some variations in strength which I don't think is down to make of coffee used. Cumbal is nice. I even suspect sometimes when you ask for cafe con leche you get a double shot to “compensate “for the milk.
What might one ask for to get a reasonable size white coffee with only one shot max ?

Re: Milky coffee
A double shot with some milk would be a Cortado Doble - at least it is around our way.

Re: Milky coffee
I believe, from experience, it is just that some places, and often waiters in the same place, use different amounts of coffee and some coffee is stronger tasting than other coffees. There doesn't seem to be a standardised measure of basic coffee strength or amount used in a cup of coffee.

Re: Milky coffee
You could try ordering a sombra or a nube, but you might find them too milky and not enough coffee, guess you just have to experiment. There is an accepted range of coffee types in the Málaga area, but apparently it's quite a local thing and if you tried ordering a sombra or a nube in Madrid, for example, they wouldn't know what you meant. See the list shown in the picture in this link, showing the different amounts of coffee in each.

Free at last. Brilliant, will try sombra or nube on our travels. Wont be asking for a cortado doble. Suspect that is what we have been getting !
Re: Milky coffee
My wife doesn't like strong coffee and always has a Sombre. Its perfect for her. Nube is too weak.

Re: Milky coffee

Re: Milky coffee
I find that on the coast I have to order cafe solo grande, con leche aparto which does the trick (I can then put a lot less milk in it !). Inland the cafe con leche is usually much stronger, and works OK for me.

Re: Milky coffee
Order an un Americano (black long coffee) con Leche a parte. Then add as much or as little of the milk as you want
Re: Milky coffee
In our neck of the woods, if a milky one shot coffee is required then we order cafe manchado or cafe man-chow in local dialect. On a hot day ordering a cafe manchado templado means using or topping with cold milk. With a bit of luck you'll get milk stained with coffee or worst case the other way round!

When I am out for more than a couple of hours I always take a flask of Nescafé rather than rely on some disgusting concoction of someone's interpretation of a cup of coffee!

Re: Milky coffee
I'm pretty sure you're taking the pi55 here, Nescafe ?
Re: Milky coffee
When in the Uk instant Nescafe is my coffee of choice. I would never go in a costa or similar and give £3 for a coffee. In Spain it better coffee for 1.10 ish
Re: Milky coffee
Nothing wrong with Nescafe . I too take a flask especially if going somewhere with no cafes around for hours.Manchesteral wrote:I'm pretty sure you're taking the pi55 here, Nescafe ?
Just come back from the UK. My dad has some “ you must try this” Marks and Spencer coffee flavoured with toasted yak dung or similar.
