E121 & prescription costs for over 60s

Postby Miro on Tue Nov 03, 2009 9:20 pm

Just a quickie for anyone who knows for sure: The UK consulate website states

"Once registered with the Spanish authorities, the E121 gives you and your dependants the same medical cover in Spain as a Spanish national under the Spanish state-run health scheme. This cover may not be the same as you received on the NHS in the UK so you may have to pay for some treatments or services."

Am I right therefore in assuming that, although prescriptions are free for the over 60s in the UK, if someone moves here and registers with E121, they will not get free prescriptions here until they reach 65?

Sorry if this has been answered before, I've searched for ages and can't find it.
Don't worry about what people think, they don't do it very often

I was getting free scrips before 65. Maybe it was because my OH was over 65 and I was a dependent.

It's far more likely that the doc just used the red (free) scrips for both of us rather than the green (not free) scrips.

Both my OH and I (neither of us having reached 65) have been getting all prescriptions free, with regular items available in any Andalucian farmacia simply by producing our tarjeta de salud.
I reckon that as the paperwork to be registered classifies us as pensionistas, the Spanish authorities simply treat us as they do a Spanish pensioner, ignoring the different qualifying age.
The more someone says "You can't say that!" the more important it is that you do say it.

As you are only issued with an E121 if you are of pensionable age (either 60 for a woman - at the moment- or 65 for a man) or are in reciept of some other long term benefits from the UK, you will find that you get red prescriptions from the doctor as you are classed as pensionistas, regardless of age.
I can spell but I can't type
