Using Prevision Medica

Postby PavAmber » Sun Mar 05, 2017 4:46 pm

Hi
My wife and I are with Prevision Medica on their "Salud" policy. We have been covered since 1st January 2017.

Despite reading the policy through (with Google!), I am still not clear on the process and wondered if anyone can clarify.

1. If we just need a routine doctors appointment, I think we just select one of their general medicine providers from the directory and go along with one of the "cheques", is that correct? Unfortunately there don't seem to be any out Alcaucin way.

2. My reading of the policy (and I will admit my medical Spanish isn't up to much) is that there are time exclusions. In other words you can't claim for certain conditions/treatments for up to x months. It appears that some of these are up to 8 months. It seems strange that you can take out a policy that excludes a claim for 2/3rds of the policy duration, have I mis-read? Fortunately we are in good health so not too big an issue.

3. Can you get an MOT - used to be called annual well man/woman check under the policy?

4. Do you need to pre-authorise any visit with Prevision Medica? My reading suggest you do, but sure I read on here that people have made appointments direct with doctors without notifying Prevision first.

Many thanks in anticipation
Richard

1. Correct they will need a cheque
2. Correct but only applies in the first year of the policy.
It is to prevent someone having a some serious illness diagnosed today, taking out a policy tomorrow and expecting treatment the next day and then cancelling the policy once treated.
3. Yes both myself and my wife have regular check-ups, blood tests, mammograms, smear tests etc.
4. some tests/examinations/ treatments need pre authorising. Can be done online and is usually very quick.
When you make an appointment the receptionist will tell you whether or not it needs pre authorising.
Depending where you go they might fax off the paperwork to Provision Medica for authorisation.
A doctor's appointment doesn't, usually, need pre authorising.
Cheers

Thanks Gerry
Ref point 3. Do you do this (these) via a General practitioner or do they call them Well Woman / Man (in Spanish obviously!).

Have you found any centre to be particularly good? We were considering using the Nerja Clinica Rincon purely on the basis we know Nerja quite well.

We have insurance through Prevision Medica too, and I agree with Gerry's answers. Waiting periods before various types of treatments are covered are standard with any type of private health insurance, for the reasons Gerry gave.

For annual check-ups and GP visits, also some specialist consultations, we use Clinica Rincon in Torre del Mar. The only routine thing I haven't been able to get done there are blood tests (Prevision Medica told me I couldn't get those done there, so I go to the Centro Medico El Carmen in Vélez-Málaga for those instead). The doctors and other staff at Clinica Rincon are fine, but the clinic is often very busy and I find I have to wait well beyond my appointment time - sometimes it can take upwards of 10 minutes just to get to the front of the queue at the reception desk. It's a lot quicker than that at the public Centro de Salud1

For my well woman checkup, I make an appointment directly with the gynaecologist at Clinica Rincon, using a cheque, plus she asks for an additional check to cover the smear test. She then writes a "prescription" for the mammogram (plus an ultrasound which I need to have in addition to the mammogram), and anything else she feels necessary such as a blood test or bone density scan. I then scan those and email them to Prevision Medica for authorisation, and they email them back (within hours). Once I have the authorisations I make the appointments to have the tests done, and just hand over the authorised prescriptions when I get there (no need to use a cheque for those). I was referred to a surgeon in Malaga and asked Prevision Medica if I needed authorisation from them before seeing him, but they said no, just use a cheque. The same process was used in that he wrote prescriptions for additional tests and subsequently an in-patient operation, which were sent to Prevision Medica for authorisation.

Hi Richard
The tests are done by different doctors/ specialists.
We use Clinica Rincon in Rincon de la Victoria, on the coast road from Benajarafe and Rincon de la Victoria.
Easy to park near there.
Most of the doctors speak English and those who don't get a receptionist, who speaks English, to translate..
Cheers
