Good point. Like comparing chalk and cheese. If it is the place you want to be what difference do the roads make. `where we lived in Elviria marbella everywhere you went needed to be by the main 3 lane coast road and you took your life in your hands just trying to enter it. Going for bread could mean a 45 min hold up but it was where I wanted to live,

Maybe have a look around alora and the area around there. Pretty close to malaga. A nice town and countryside. As mentioned above the villages on the way to granada are very pretty.we visited velez de benaudella (sp) not long ago.its only just above motril near the motorway so good acess

Before we came we basically looked on the map and marked villages within so many km of the coast and made a list of the ones to visit Looked on street view etc. You always get a feel for a place as soon as you get there. You will know

It was a joke about the torrox competa road seeming to be the longest 11kms ever. Do you not have a sense of humour??????????

The road up from the coast is a nightmare. Ok on a 1 off but not one you would want to do on a regular basis. I have friends who used to have an agency in Competa, They used to collect customers from Malaga airport and be asked to abort the trip half way up the mountain road to Competa.

I like Competa but there is a little click of expats who just sit in bars in the square and get pis==d every day.

Would that be the bar halfway up the hill opposite Todo Papel by any chance? Gives me the shivers every time I walk past it.

Torrox too, busy doing nothing, but warm and in the sun - mostly.

We once counted the bends up to Competa .... something like 147! I get travel sick even when I'm driving up there. It obviously suits some people but if you want to pick up the motorway or go out for trips, you have to negotiate one of those twisty roads each time.

Canillas de Aceituno is better as it connects to the Lake Viñuela road and then you can go north or south on that to get to other parts of the district, or get onto the motorway. If you want to get out and about a lot whilst you're here then ease of access becomes quite important. As others have said, it's a case of coming here and having a good look around and get a feel for a place. We did that and just felt at home in Torrox, although that was long before we had the luxury of a motorway and any shops to speak of here..

Why not? Don't have much choice in the winter months.

Seems to me that these roads are being portrayed as much worse than they actually are. They are main roads, wide enough for 2 lorries to pass each other most of the way, there being just a few sharp bends where they couldn't due to their manoeuvrability but cars can.

Thay are certainly not dangerous even at night, nor are they particularly slow, rather the constant bends become a little tedious. And lets face it you wont be driving up an down multiple times per day.

We are a little past Sayalonga and 12.8 km from the Algarobbo motorway junction. Generally it takes 15-20 minutes to get there.

Yes I have seen cliques in a few places on the Western side too. I know a few who live on twisty roads who never venture out in the evenings because they don't like driving on them in the dark. Lunch time booze ups and back for a siesta :D

Difficult to advise anyone where to live when not really knowing the OP as everyone has different priorities. Perhaps they should decide what their red lines are. As they are not intending to live there all the time they may have different needs.

But that's the Algarrobo to Competa road. I was talking about the Torrox to Competa road which is far worse.

Not dangerous?? What about the sheer drops with no barriers. One mistake and your a goner. Those roads are lethal unless you are doing 10KM an hour.

No barriers? Maybe 20 years ago.

Cant speak for the Competa/Torrox road as we rarely use it so not as familiar with it. But the Competa/Algarobbo road has barriers all the way along and has for the 10 years we've lived here. I do hear old people tell stories of years gone by when there were no barriers tho'.

Maybe you should try it and then you will realise what some of us are talking about.
