Tourism Board supports worldwide charity record at La Cala Resort
The attempt by La Cala Resort, Mijas, Málaga to write its name into the Guinness World Records for the highest number of golfers to play in a single competition in one day has received the backing of the Costa del Sol’s Tourism Board. The competition, which will also raise funds for UNICEF, takes place on Sunday, July 22nd in collaboration with Mijas Town Hall.
Speaking at the official media launch of the competition, the president of the Board, Juan Fraile, said the support of his organisation signifies the importance of the event for the area and added that Mijas was the ideal location for such a worthwhile record attempt and charity fundraiser.
Describing it as “a magnificent initiative,” Antonio Sánchez Pacheco, Mijas Deputy Mayor and Tourism & Culture councillor, said that in world terms La Cala was seen as a great example for all golf resorts. He added that it was also an example of the organisational capacity of the municipality and its position as the centre of one of the most important golfing destinations in Spain and Europe.
UNICEF is stressing the importance of being aware of the worldwide situation affecting children and in particular the position of children in Iraq. The president of UNICEF in Málaga, Marisa de Miguel Calafat, said it was very important to raise funds to improve their desperate situation and she called on all golfers to participate.
La Cala’s Operations Manager, Julio Delgado, outlined the format of the event that will use the resort’s three 18-hole courses. Teams of three will compete with one member playing each of the courses. The winning team will be that with the best combined total. Entry fees have been set at only €20 per person, including buggies. It is hoped that between 600 and 800 players will take part.
The Costa del Sol Hippodrome in Mijas is also collaborating with the event, renaming the first race of their meeting on July 14th as the Record de Golf Solidario La Cala Resort – UNICEF. There will also be a stand where people can enter the competition.
