Repairing enamelled bath

Postby Campo Steve » Tue Jul 05, 2011 3:17 pm

I posted previously about cast iron baths. I was wrong, I should have been talking about an enamelled steel bath.

I am going to redo the bathroom but the only thing wrong with the present bath is a small chip in the enamel. Although we will be replacing everything else in the bathroom it seems pointless replacing the bath just because of a small chip.

How expensive is it to re-enamel a bath? Better still, can one buy, and where, a repair kit to fill in small chips?

We have got a chip in ours thanks to someone dropping the metal plug into the bath. Not us I might add. I bought a kit on the internet and am just trying to pluck up the courage to use it. It is made by "Cramer" and I got it from a bathroom company - can't remember who.

You need a product which I bought in Leroy Merlin, but will no doubt be available elsewhere:
Made by Ceys
Esmalte blanco restaurador cerámico.
(Its a plastic bubble pack contains a small 15ml tube of white goo and a tiny brush.)
It worked for me.

Sounds like the very stuff. I have to go to Leroy Merlin anyway so will pick up some there.

Watch the colour, some helpful tenant chipped our bath, and did a repair but the stuff he aquired is whiter than the bath seems to come in shades !

From what I have seen on the Leroy Merlin web site it may only be available in white. I'll check when I'm there.

 It was all the rage when we bought it!
It still holds water...what's the point of changing it? Anyway it matches the Bidet and WC!!! I'm sticking with it, it'll see us out!

When applying the repair kit don't put too much on at one go do it over a couple of days and build the thickness up gradually. We got a kit from eBay and it worked a treat. 8)

Got the Ceys Esmalte blanco restaurador cerámico at Leroy Merlin. Sorry, Country Boy, they only had white.

It is whiter than the bath, but all baths in Leroy Merlin, Bauhaus, Plumbing centres etc all seem to be the same shad of white. I assume with use the repair won't look as white.

It IS a repair Steve, it might not be invisible, but much better than the chip which was going rusty in the bottom of our bath!
