PVC glue
PVC glue
I have an inflatable spa which has a air leak.
I've tried sticking a patch on it using variuos different glues.
Most of them seem to soften in the hot sun and the air pressure inside the spa lifts the patch.
Any recommendations foe a PVC glue which will stick PVC to PVC?
Cheers

Re: PVC glue
Im sorry jerry ... PVC and PVC (plastisols) do not adhere to anything ( a bit like polythene) the only way to join them is by fusing them with heat.
I presume you have tried the PVC adhesive for joining Spouting and Drainage pipes - they are the best glues for an anti shear joint but not very good in tension. They do take an age to 'dry' though.

Re: PVC glue
I tend to agree, I'm not sure a pipe weld type of plumbers PVC glue would be up to it. From experience I'd be looking at the sikaflex range, this stuff has helped me out so many times with jobs other adhesives would not touch.
Off the top of my head maybe look at the 291 or 292 from the range for starters. There will be something for the job I'm certain from this company.

Welding is not an option as I can only get at one side.Martin Page wrote:Im sorry jerry ... PVC and PVC (plastisols) do not adhere to anything ( a bit like polythene) the only way to join them is by fusing them with heat.

Tried the pipe adhesive. It works OK on pipes as it softens the surfaces and glues them together. Doesn't soften the flexible PVC.

Re: PVC glue
I know it's unconventional and the result may look a bit like Pudsey the bear, but try a good quality Gaffer tape. Sticks like whotsit to a blanket and may be do the trick. You can always remove it if it doesn't work!

This looks as if it is what I need http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271995795312? ... Tags=bu=bu
But got a reply from the seller "Sorry we can't ship this item to Spain. It is classified as being too dangerous for international mail."
I shall try to find it here in Spain.

Re: PVC glue
Not sure why it is listed an ebay.es when it can't be posted to Spain.
The Amazon product is for neoprene which is a different material to PVC so not sure if it would be suitable.
The Ebay one is definitely suitable just need to find it, or similar, here in Spain.

Re: PVC glue
What about the glue and patches that commercial tyre companies use. My friend uses a glue to stick patches on the inside of tyres when they make a repair. He roughs the inside of the tyre and puts the glue on then leaves it about 20 minutes before he puts the patch on. There is a lot of heat in a tyre so I guess this should work.
Re: PVC glue
I wondered about that but tyres are made of rubber and the air pressure inside the tyre will try to force the patch out through the hole ensuring it is sealed.
I will have a patch on the outside so the air pressure inside will try, and often succeed, in separating the patch from the spa.

Re: PVC glue
Got some 2 part adhesive specially made for repairing inflatable PVC dingies so should be exactly what I need.
However I now have the problem of removing some left over adhesive from one of my previous repair attempts.
I tried using contact adhesive which has left a patch of dried on contact adhesive.
Any suggestions for removing it, that you have tried, that I can get here in Spain?
I know there are contact adhesive cleaners but haven't found any in Spain.
Cheers

Re: PVC glue
What about a piece of fine glass paper or emery paper. That will also make a nice rough service to bond too.

Re: PVC glue
I would try Disolvente Universal. I find its the only thing that shifts contact adhesive.

Re: PVC glue
I've tried some brands of Disolvente Universal but none of them seem to work.
The problem with different brands of Disolvente Universal is that they don't all have the same mix of ingredients.
I guess there are some brands that do have the necessary mix of ingredients to remove the contact adhesive.
Which brand have you used?
Cheers

Re: PVC glue
Gerry, its made by S.P.B and comes in a green tin with a picture of a waterfall on it. It doesn't show the contents. I can't remember where I bought it, but it was probably one of the big hypermarkets.

Re: PVC glue
Your right Gerry ....Dissolvent is a blend of what ever solvents are reclaimed from the solvent paint reprocessing system, and what type of paints they reprocess, Usually they chuck the lot in a great big still and fractionally distil off the solvents they WANT and sell at premium Price (like Acetone). As the Fractions change, you get an over spill blend from the individual solvents which are vented off to waste (or redistillation)as a blend of the previous to the next.
These are then cross blended into a ratio of Solvents, Diluents, Solutes and Dispersants - that are principally designed for cleaning and are to a very loose specification.
Its amazing what you can get to learn on this forum.

Hi Sid
Got some of the product you used from Eroski.
Just had a quick test and I think it will work.
But as my weather station is recording 41 C outside I will wait until early tomorrow morning when it is a bit cooler.
Cheers
Gerry
UPDATE
Yes it does work but it is not quick.
Using a stainless steel pan scourer, plenty of dissolvite and plenty of elbow grease works.
Cheers
