Aircon - Heating

Postby jaycecampo » Mon Nov 07, 2016 7:25 pm

Maybe a stupid question but is the running cost the same for hot air to heat house in the winter as cold air for cooling in the summer ?

It depends on the type of unit you have but generally yes....it is quite economical with the right equipment.

Aircon heating is the cheapest form of electrical heating by a huge margin.

The thermal efficiency is much the same whether it is heating or cooling, but clearly it depends on how much you need to increase or reduce the temperature compared with the ambient temperature.

Thanks, we have a built in wood burner, waste of time, only good if you sit in front of it. We bought the right size for the space it was to heat. Thought I would try the air con unit instead. I know during the summer when we used the air con my bills increased from 90 to 130 a month, not too bad to be cool, had it on about 7 hours a day, only for the dogs of course !!! So will try the heating version for a month and check the bill....Colder up here in the campo....

Does your woodburner have a fan/fans to push out hot air? Ours (a 65cm Rodi & Rofer 'Alpha') is fan equipped, and can push out 13kW of heat, if desired. It also heats an upstairs bedroom via one of its 10cm take-off ducts.

We have the inverter type and they are very cheap to run. The older type are more expensive. Running ours for 3 to 4 hours a day in July/ August hardly effects the electric bill.

No I don't think the wood burner has a fan, can't hear one. It is a purpose built in one.

If no fan fitted, then it is working at a disadvantage. If built in, do look at whether it could be modified, or take a look at R&R's offerings, which are superbly built, unlike the tinny stuff in most of the big stores. R&R are in Torre del Mar, and have a showroom at their factory. Web site too. Nice people.
