Balcony railing

Postby Squirrel » Mon Nov 07, 2016 10:18 pm

Hi the balcony on our flat has quite a low railing that is not safe for young children. We may need to cover with some sort of matting initially any pointers as to where to buy a roll of matting ?
In the longer term we would like to replace the railing with something more substantial but I can't find any companies that might do this, does anyone know of any companies? Thanks

Before you do anything, Squirrel, it would be a good idea to check what your Community allows in relation to alterations to the building's external appearance. It could save future embarrassment, not to mention needless expense.

I wouldn't be worried about the community if it was a danger to my children. Some of the balconies are ridiculously low. You may find something temp at Leroy Merlins. There is a company at Fuengirola on the Camino de Coin that does wrought iron work.

It can't be difficult to email the community president and clarify what you can & can't do. That's what living in a community is about.

Never mind the community. It will of course require approval from the ayuntamiento architect and a permit. Sometimes non trivial, and always enjoyable in that inimitable Spanish love of bureaucracy way...

Quite right and while you wait 3 years for hearing and appeal if they go against you one of your kids or grand kids falls off the balcony. Do something about it and worry about it if someone complains.
We are in a very Spanish area and a resident fitted glass curtains and bricked in there balcony totally against the rules. 5 years on and its still like it.

Yes, do check with the Community chair, to see their take on it.
Where safety is concerned, you are permitted to take immediate action to prevent disaster or accident (eg landslip, necessitating the building of a wall) even if Ayuntamiento permission has not been obtained.
Whatever you do, simply maintain it was a "temporary and necessary measure", if challenged.

What on earth happened to the Delete Post option on this php site, so an accidentally duplicated post could be removed by its author?

I wasn't aware that it had gone as I have that option as a mod. When I spot a duplicate, I delete it.

If you regret what you posted then just edit out the text. I will then delete that as well.

Yes, the Delete Post option doesn't seem to be there. Usually a small 'x' icon, next to the Edit one, unless it's hidden somewhere else.

That is very much open to interpretation. But it is certainly a mitigating issue.

Any reja / metal work company on any industrial estate will make you new railings or alter the ones that you have. When I worked with the guy in alhaurin i remember cutting a top bar off and extending it by 25cm then putting the top bar back on, painting it all, and you couldn't see the difference. You could always draw what you want and ask them for a price.

if you are on an urbanisation, remember you´ll need to speak to the president and get their permission to change the outside of your own apartment... haha
