To instal aluminium guttering or not?

Postby HugoW » Wed Apr 04, 2018 3:34 pm

Advice please. We are considering installing guttering. What are people's views on guttering? Is it hard to maintain? We won't be able to reach some of it. We only come out for holidays.
We need to let the installer know tomorrow.
I assume he'll need permission from the town hall?
Many thanks.

Permission almost certainly not needed, unless on a building of special interest, or maybe on a main road.
Plastic guttering here is really durable, bracketed at least every 1m to the wall; if hung from the roof-tile edge, probably every 0.5m. Various profiles available, including half-round and flat-back-fluted.

Plastic guttering is totally OK if UV resistant. Make sure you install filters so you can remove dirt easy, typical gutters get totally clogged up in about a year to the point it start growing weeds inside.

The gutters should be either collected into cisterns or directed to sewers. If you have a decent sized yard you can lead it out like 2 meters from the house if you have a decent grade but as soon as you get less than that you will have problems during rain season.

If you’re in a windy area you might want to install brackets much closer than 1m. We put ours up at 0.5, then found it in the track, having gone over the roof and back patio. All the clips had snapped, which seems to be the weak point of plastic guttering. Ours has now been up for about 6 years with no problems and clips every 30cm

I would go for aluminium guttering, this is what the builder used for me. The stuff he used anyone with a good ladder could fit.
The brackets screw on to the bottom of the tile kindof clamp and guttering fits in and screws to tighten into position.
Personally i think plastic clip-in type of guttering not good for what can get very windy in Spain.

Our plastic guttering (wall-fixed) has been in place for 14 years now, with no issues. Winds at the house can reach 80km/h. Wall fixing will be more secure than tile-edge clipped, but if you have a large roof-tile overhang, there may be little choice.

Torre, you likely know best as this the only experience in Spain.
20 years ago i lived in a house where there was clip-on plastics.
They would not last a winter in Spain..
