Daily running time for Pool Pump

Postby championc » Fri May 04, 2018 9:57 pm

Hi all,

Can someone please advise me of a guideline for the duration a pump in a community pool should be running daily ?

I assume there must be some form of calculation too based on the pool volume and the performance characteristic of the pump (pumping rate in litres per hour).

Maybe, to ask the question in a different way, how often should the whole volume of the pool be filtered ? Our pool is about 500m3. I think the pool pump is able to do about 15000 litres per hour.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Pool water should be recirculated approximately twice a day.

If your pool is 500 cu mtr, that is 50,000 litres, therefore you need to run 100,000 litrs through your pump.

If your pump is capable of 15,000 ltrs / hour, the math is simple.

100,000 / 15000 = 6.66 or 7 hours running time.

Hi there

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Infortunately, I believe 500 cu mtr = 500,000 and therefore, there wouldn't be enough hours in the day to follow your guidelines.

I think you need to remove the “abouts” from your figures. If your pool truly is 500 cm m then 15k/l per hour is woefully under capacity. Check the exact specifications.
Converting 500 cu m to us gallons gives you 132000, to filter all of this in eight hours means you need 16,500 gallons per hour throughput, or 275 gallons per minute.....as a 2” pipe can only handle 100 GPM you have a problem!

What were the dimensions of the pool?

It is worth noting that the recommendation to recirculate the contents twice a day is for "commercial" pools with heavy usage, which is the case here. For normal domestic private pools there is no need to run the pump anything like this amount. For a lightly used pool in summer an hour or so a day is sufficient.

The pool is irregular in shape and is about 20m x 5m x avg depth 1m.

Unfortunately, any specs on the pool pump are well worn away and so I tried calculating the pump flow by filling a 5 litre water bottle at each jet to estimate the pump volume per hour

So 100 cu m then.....100000 litres, or 6 hours 40 minutes for a complete filtering. Pumps should be run whenever the pool is in use, but I would settle for 2 “sessions” of 3 hours a day in season, overriding the break on busy days?

if you aren't getting much use of it then there is no need to turn over even once a day, just go for a minimum of a few hours. if it was a fish tank and inhabitants lives depended on it then sure but its just a pool, the worst that could happen is algae grows, so raise the chlorine as needed or just clean it up.
