Best gardening tool I've ever bought.

Postby Devils Advocate » Mon Sep 05, 2016 10:43 am

Apologies if this has been mentioned by others before but worth another mention even if it has.

Needed to get shut of some small trees, thick bushes etc. and got the old petrol chainsaw out, which my Mrs. hates me using and to be realistic is a bit overkill anyway. With lying around unused for ages it is also a b'stard to get it going some times.

Anyway, a mate recommended the B&D alligator, a hand held enclosed small chainsaw. Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick I thought, however the lad is no mug so I took a punt on Amazon with one.

Bloody incredible little thing, 2", 3" 4" limbs not a problem, even did a 7 inch diameter silver birch in no time at all. Very, very impressed and safe enough for the Mrs to use with ease. A cracking low priced bit of kit. Recommended.

Nice one Irene, long time no speak. Hope all is well with you both.

I reckon son in law will be very impressed, not for cutting down the Amazonian rain forest but for small trees large branches etc which are a pain to cut by hand and not worth the hassle of risking it with a petrol saw this thing is brilliant. So rapid and unfussed doing it too! As I say the largish birch was dispatched with ease.

This is another one you should have. Much lighter (1.4kg) and cordless and used one handed. You can get into branches that a larger saw cannot. It cuts up to about 4" and can be used on other materials as it comes with different blades.

For something bigger I use a "chainsaw on a stick" like this

Petrol driven chain saw etc. Hard to start next time? Top tip. Empty of fuel after use prior to storage. Dispose of fuel mix older than two months.

Hi DA - I'm good, thanks, hope you are too. Daughter and Son-in-law have a LOT of trees! I've just seen your recommendation, Sid, will check that out, too. Thanks!

I like the idea. How easy is to sharpen the chain and does it use chain oil?

It has a small reservoir for oil and it says fill every ten minutes of cutting. I also lube the chain itself manually with the small bottle supplied. Chain is simple to tension via 2 self adjustment nuts as well. Couldn't be easier.

It really is a great tool and far better than the blade type which just don't have the capability of this, we've tried most of them now..

Took another 8" diameter tree down today with it, it is all chopped in to logs now as well as 4 and 5 inch limbs. The alligator walked the job, easily as quick as the my petrol saw, considering this can cut on the floor where the petrol one can't.

Same method as per usual, do it yourself if poss. or take it to a shop who'll do it for you. Spare chains are only 12-14 quid each so I think I'd probably buy a new one when the time arises, if there's nobody that local can sharpen the original.

I sharpen my own stihl chain and it's quite easy, you need to buy the correct file profile for your chain and it takes less than 10 mins to do both directions. Make sure you sharpen the chain evenly by counting number of strokes per tooth and normally I do 3 strokes. Lild sometime sells a chain saw sharpening machine for arround €20. If you replace chainsaw eveytime it is blunt then it will add up. Sharpen the chain regularly will help cleaner and faster cuts.

Oh wow, this thing looks amazing. I've got a fairly unruly patch of shrubbery I need to take care of and this looks like just the thing!

One US YouTube vid clearly shows this as having a battery, but Amazon shows it as an electric cord.

So, battery or electric?

How does this tool handle multiple small branches or tight bundles of same? i.e. can it "gnaw" it's way through thick stuff?
