satellite dish positioning for Spanish TV

Postby olive on Tue Nov 03, 2009 5:38 pm

Hi I have an 80 cm dish and Metronics decoder.

I am looking for info on direction, elevation and if LCB skew is necessary in order to receive Spanish TV. I have looked at other peoples dishes but there doesn't seem to be much of a common theme. The nearest house's dish seems to point West and slightly upwards from the horizontal. Presumably it isn't so critical as say a Sky dish for reception.

How many channels should I be able to receive?

List of free to air Spanish channels on www.flysat.com/tv-sp.php As you can see there are two options. Point a dish at 19E or for a bit more choice 30W. 19E is 11 degrees further West than a Sky UK dish points and 5 degrees higher in elevation(figures for Vinuela) The skew would be slightly less clockwise. 30W is almost at a right angle compared to your Sky dish (86 degrees further west) and 4 degrees higher in elevation than one for Sky. The LNB skew would need altering so it is anti-clockwise when viewed from the front. It still is fairly critical to point accurately but signals are stronger and the smaller dish has a wider beamwidth so you could argue not quite as critical.

Hi Olive

If you don't want to pay for the Spanish sat system and only want the free to view channels, you are better off with a free to air box and a normal outside ariel, as the free to view have a lot of free channels, many more than the satallite, I sacked my spanish sat and went on the free view some time ago, easy to set up, unlike the sat dish.

I've got a free to air box (one of the metronic jobs that AKi sold with a dish and LNB).

I have an aerial but no matter where I point it I have failed to get anything on it.

I'll give it a try again as that would be a nicer solution visually!

Thanks, olive

Hi Olive

It sounds like you have a digi box not a free to air, you don't need a LNB or a dish with a free to air box, just the normal type ariel.
