Windows Update - Windows 7

Postby irismary » Fri Dec 14, 2018 6:00 pm

Had updates yesterday and as usual did a restart but windows wouldn´t load and went straight to Windows Diagnostics and Repair then seemed to get stuck in a never ending loop. Finally, thank goodness, an HP page came up in which I could do a systen restore. All was then well. But being a pessimist, I immedaitely made a new System Restore disc.
Today, exactly the same happened. I am assuming that there was some sort of glitch with one or more of the updates as on checking the log a couple failed to load. I have now turned off Windows updater as I don´t want the same thing happening whenever I want to restart. Has anyone else had any problem in the past couple of days?

Hi irismary,
I've just updated a Windows 7 system OK.

Not much info to go on..

So please Post the KB updates that Failed.

Also look in the Event Viewer around the time the updates installed and see if any Error messages were logged.

Type Event in the Search bar............bottom left on screen.

Hi Enrique, and thanks for the reply
This is the insrtallation that failed on 3 separate occasions (same code)

2018-12 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB4471987)

Installation date: ‎14/‎12/‎2018 09:45

Installation status: Failed
I have looked at the event log, but nothing seems to have occurred on either 13 or 14th December when Windows failed to open. There are other events today, but I can´t make head or tail of them! Nothing suggests a windows failure. All seems well at the moment, but I am reluctant to put Updates back on as they will try again as I have done a system restore to before these updates were downloaded. I haven´t tried to restart either!! Mostly the laptop is on all the time and left to go to sleep when not in use.

Hi irismary,

The way forward.............
1) delete files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

2) Reboot the system

3) Control Panel ->Windows Update-> Check for updates

This will download any outstanding Updates

4) Install ...................as these are Important updates it will automatically Create a Restore Point

5) When the updates complete............ Reboot system.

Please let me know how you get on........... :D

Thanks Enrique, did as you suggested. However, when the updates were complete and I restarted the system, the same happened i.e. Windows start failure. Eventually got the system restored and have now turned off updates again.

Hi Enrique, yes have rebooted since the restore and all normal. I have deleted the downloads again as suggested in step 1 of your reply, but haven't checked the updates failures - don't feel strong enough today!! Will look later after a glass of something soothing! Will let you know. Jeanne

Hi irismary,

" yes have rebooted since the restore and all normal."............that's good.

The way forward.............
1) delete files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

2) reboot the system

3) click on Start type cmd .........a black window will pop up

4) type sfc /scannow save me typing reams.....please read the bits about Windows 7 in the following

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ted-system

This will take some time to run..........more glasses of something soothing can pass the time here............. :D

Hopefully no errors...........

5) Control Panel ->Windows Update-> Check for updates

6) This time click on Important updates this will show ones it wants to install
7) Right click on each update and Hide update

In theory these updates should stay uninstalled.

When Microsoft issues new updates see if they install .

Hi Enrique, just to say that events have overtaken and I haven´t yet tried your fix. Waiting until Christmas etc is over as I can´t bear the thought of it all going pear shaped at the moment. I will be back in touch when I have done it. At the moment have Windows Update turned off. Hope you had a good Christmas. Jeanne
