High Speed Internet/Fibre Availability

Postby MSclaire » Mon Feb 20, 2017 1:32 pm

Hello everyone

Hoping someone can help & apologies if this has been asked before but.....

My partner and I are planning to move to the Costa del Sol before the year is out. We are looking at the Estepona/Casares/Manilva areas for a long term rental as a 'try before we buy' option, however as my partner owners his own UK company and plans to work from home, we need a high speed reliable internet connection to do so.

An online search has returned a fair amount of conflicting data, so I was wondering if we could get an idea of best availability from someone on the ground?

Many thanks and have a lovely day - Claire

Hi Claire
Welcome to the forum.
The conflicting data can be due to where exactly you want to live in Estepona/Casares/Manilva
The availability of Fibre can vary from street to street/ urbanisation to urbanisation as can a fast signal via 4G.
Cheers

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your reply. We're coming down in April on a scouting mission, so I guess it would be a case of finding a rental and then checking with the various providers?

All part of the adventure

No knowledge of Casares pueblo but pretty well all of Estepona and Manilva are covered by fibre optic lines up to 300mb/s, although there are inevitably pockets where it hasn't been installed yet. Also bear in mind that some individual communities don't have it even though there is fibre optic cable on the streets nearby. Movistar have slung fibre cables along telegraph lines into semi campo areas too so spreading the network further.
I will say that if there is fibre available, movistar install pretty quick around here. No more than a day or two.

Try the moviestar or telefonica websites. You can put your postcode in once you know your area.

Yes, between Estapona and Gibraltar. Just up in the hills
from Manilva. Any advice please gentlemen?
We stayed in Benalmadna. The apartment had no
phone line but had TV and WiFi.
With it being a holiday home I don’t want to have
to rent a phone line. Not sure of the cost of line and
WiFi?? Any advice appreciated. Thanks ian

So you mean Casares?

Try Avatel or Olivenet for fibre optic, you can find details online. Both offer far better deals than movistar, several international call packs and with TV including UK TV built in.

I'm down the hill near the taxi rank and Repsol garage at Bahia De Casares. Happy to show you the TV systems I'm using.

I am in the process of helping moving two friends who live in the same apartments from Movistar to Avatel, I am also with Avatel and they are excellent, the first lady has had it all set up now, from sending in the documents via email it was installed in a week, was e29.99 300mb fiber with TV which has all usual BBC etc and landline, olive net also cheap but I have read about installation taking some time, the above apartments are in Sabinillas. Those friends were paying extortionate prices with moviestar.

As far as UK TV on Avatel is concerned remember that only BBC1, BBC2 and ITV are in HD, all the others are in blurry SD unfortunately, watchable though for most people. I use IntelSat 907 and a few other systems for my UK TV.

Avatel have an 18 month permanency clause, good for making the price stay the same not sure what will happen if you try and get out of it before the term is up.

Thanks for the info everyone. Appreciate it.
Further investigation has revealed that internet is
available. Not sure who from as yet. Thanks for the offer
North&South. I’ll take you up on that offer. We’re back for a week on the 22nd April. I’ll get in touch then if
that’s okay. Thanks Ian
