Smarty DNS
Smarty DNS
Anybody else having a problem with Now TC and BB Iplayer using Smarty DNS? It was working fine until yesterday afternoon, but now whenever a programme is chosen on IPlayer it just flips straight back to the Now TV home page, which is a bloody nuisance. I have tried a different DNS from Smarty's website but to no avail. ITV Hub and Now TV package seem to be working, just BBC not playing ball. Anyone have any ideas? Suggestions gratefully received.

Re: Smarty DNS
If you log into SmartyDNS, their first-page Dashboard includes up-to-date notices about Channels experiencing difficulties.
If you hit a problem, and something is inexplicably not working, do raise a Ticket with them. I've found these very quickly answered and problems sorted. Impressed so far.

Re: Smarty DNS
IPlayer not working at the moment with Smarty at the moment.
I’ve had to set up a trial account with Unblockus.

Re: Smarty DNS
I have no problem with the BBC iPlayer using Smarty DNS' VPN set to UK London.
Re: Smarty DNS
How do you set Smarty DNS' VPN to UK London on the Android app?
The only UK option is "UK"

Hi Gerry
Sign out of Smart DNS, top right three vertical dots. Choose VPN and sign in. There is a drop down menu of ten servers to choose from. When you have chosen, press the OFF button at the top and it usually connects after a few seconds. The button then turns blue and says ON.
I think I slightly mis-understood your post. My only UK option is London.

Re: Smarty DNS
BBCiPlayer wasn't working on the TV for a couple of days but I've just checked it now and it's back working. Presume it was a problem that we've had before where the BBC has blocked Smarty.

Re: Smarty DNS
Hi Wicksey, Using Smarty's VPN gets around this. I don't know if you can download Smarty DNS onto a smart tv, I've never tried it.
Re: Smarty DNS
The DNS is in my router so that's how I get BBCiPlayer etc on my Smart TV (and the laptop/phone etc that also accesses my wifi). Not sure how I could put the VPN into the router, but reluctant to touch it now it's all set up and working

Re: Smarty DNS
You can usually change the DNS settings in the TV and that seems to override what is in the router. The only box I have come across that you cannot change is the NOW TV.
Wicksey, most routers will not allow you to setup a VPN. Those that do tend to be the more expensive ones or those that have been flashed to allow it. You can set up a VPN in your phone or iPad quite easily though.

Re: Smarty DNS
BBC iPlayer with Smarty is down, yet again, particularly frustrating when the Intelsat satellite is hidden behind the rain and will not receive.
I know some members use Unblock US which I have used in the past, do they get the same problems? Or should I try the Smarty VPN which is included in my subscription?

Re: Smarty DNS
I use Smarty VPN all the time and it works fine.
Re: Smarty DNS
Smarty VPN works fine but using it I need to cast using my phone, where as with DNS I have my router set up and can use BBC iPlayer from the TV. Also the VPN is more susceptible to problems caused by lower internet speeds.

Re: Smarty DNS
Yes, I accept that the VPN works but DNS is a simpler approach although I don’t have speed problems.
I will try a free trial from Unblock and set up Smarty VPN as well to compare the two approaches.
However I would still like to hear from Unblock DNS users to see if they have the same BBC problems. I suspect that the BBC is deliberately targeting them for some reason, but it even easier to block known VPN servers so it is difficult to understand what is going on.
