Windows 7 - x86 ?

Postby chrissiehope » Sun Apr 08, 2018 11:52 am

I've just downloaded Synctoy to my W7 pc, but I was given a choice of x86 & another 'x' whose number I can't remember ! How can I check which type I have, to be sure I've got the right one before I install it ?

OK, its 64 bit & therefore x64 - I've downloaded the x86, should I delete it & re-download the correct one, or doesn't it really matter ?

Hi chrissiehope,

"SyncToy for x64 can be installed and work only on x64 Systems (The “Win 7 Home Premium x64” one in your case). The x86 version of SyncToy, on the other hand, can be installed and work on both x64 and x86 Systems"

I would use the x64 version................

I have now dowloaded, installed & run Synctoy :-) - one query - previously (on old XP) the Synctoy files were available to use straightaway, as they were stored in their original format. However, now when I click on the folder, all that appears is a DAT file - is this now how Synctoy works, or have I got a setting wrong somewhere ?

Hi chrissiehope,
Sounds like you have a setting wrong ........ :?:

I'll run up a copy later and have a look.................

What Folders are you trying to sync, are there any .dat files in original folder .......... :?:

Hi chrissiehope,
Just fired up Synctoy from scratch(new install ver 2.1 from Microsoft on Windows 7 system) and synced a Folder to an external drive and it's as expected, looks just like original.

For a Network drive ie one not normally attached to the computer ( NAS ) or attached to a Router.
If you have loads of Data to copy best to make a copy first to the "Sync disk" with it attached to the Computer, then replace it out on the network.

If all else fails, run up Teamviewer and give me a shout..................

I think you've lost me about halfway through ! What I do (& have always done) is to set Synctoy up on the pc & run it to an external hard drive which is normally not connected to the pc. I did notice when setting it up, for the first time, that it seemed to be more complex than I remembered - I'm sure that in the past, all I had to do was select a folder to create a pair, & Synctoy created a copy folder. This time I had to create a folder myself, and then there was another item (not sure if it was a folder) that needed naming. I don't recall that extra step before, but I assumed that the software had moved on a lot since I last downloaded it years ago ! From what you say, maybe I've done something wrong :-( . I think maybe I'll delete the DAT files, uninstall & re-install Synctoy, and see how it goes from there... just a little job for tomorrow ;-)

Hi Enrique, I have deleted all the files, & uninstalled Synctoy. I am going to re-boot & then download & install Synctoy again. This time perhaps you would be able to watch on Team viewer so you can see what I'm doing (probably wrongly ;-) ) - I'll post again when I'm back !
