Security weirdy

Postby gerryh » Sun Apr 22, 2018 5:59 pm

When I try to access https://www.amazon.co.uk/ I get a "Your connection is not secure" messagewhich on expanding I get:-

"www.amazon.co.uk uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for the following names:
*.smartdnsproxy.com, smartdnsproxy.com Error code:
SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN"

I have been looking at smartydns but have un-installed it.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi gerryh,
You talking about two different products.........or just a typo....... :?:

Either way..........clear Browser Cache and cookies.
Check DNS settings not in Wifi Adapter

Using cmd ............ type ipconfig /flushdns

Lets know how you get on.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

No, not a typo. Two different products that is what I found very confusing.
Changing the adaptor settings /Ethernet Properties for my Network connection back to what it was before installed Smart Dns and clearing the cookies has solved the problem.

The problem came back today.
My internet connection is via a 4g modem which only has one ethernet socket.
So I have a router attached which is just used as a 4 way ethernet connector.
I set this up, as a trial, with Smart DNS, and for some strange reason it caused the problem accessing
www.amazon.co.uk
Doing a factory reset on the router has cured the problem, so far.

No idea what may be causing it but for reference I have Smart DNS on my router and haven't experienced your problem on accessing Amazon UK on Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari

As I said, weird. Only http://www.amazon.co.uk/ affected.
Don't actually need Smart DNS as I use SmartyDns when Iplayer isn't blocked.

Likewise regarding Smarty I have been using them for well over two years but seeing as they have still not solved the BBC Iplayer & related issues for well over three weeks now I lost faith and now use SmartDNS proxy which TBH are proving very reliable and the customer service is excellent. As I personally like using iplayer I do need a reliable supplier.

Agree. I have just paid for a 2 year sub to Smart DNS Proxy for $49.99. My SmartyDNS is still active if I need it.

Going off my original topic.
I raiesd a query with Smartydns regarding the blocking of iPlayer.
Here is their response:-

Hi Gerry,

Unfortunately, for now, we do not have an ETA on solving this issue.

The problem is that BBC started to block servers used by VPN and Smart DNS providers more aggressively than ever. They block entire networks of servers from UK data centers. It's very hard to find a server that's not blocked and even when we find one, it's blocked almost immediately after we start using it. That's why it takes some time before a reliable server is found by our technical team.

We are working on solving this problem and we will let you know once this issue is gone. To reward at least a bit your patience we have added to your account one month of free service.

We are sorry for any inconveniences and thank you for your patience!

Best regards,
Vlad B.

Cheers

Yes i had a similar email a few weeks ago, and as I pointed out previously on the "SmartyDNS" thread what impressed me regarding SMARTDNSPROXY was their much larger choice of DNS servers to choose from, approx 30 against the 3 SMARTY offer. Possibly the amount of servers and locations SMARTDNSPROXY have makes it a much harder target for the bbc techs to attack and block. And you'd think if the Beeb were as quoted " BBC started to block servers used by VPN and Smart DNS providers more aggressively than ever" then more DNS/VPN suppliers and not just SMARTY would have this long running iplayer issue?

https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/Servers

Also being a fair bit cheaper than Smarty is a bonus, I signed up for $19.90 for a year compared to the current $39.95 Smarty are charging.

I need both
Smarty’s speeds are better especially with NowTv and Sky. I paid the same as you First so having them both isn’t a problem.
It’s a bit strange that this is a general problem with Smarty but not with the others. They must be a marked VPN company by the beeb.

Agreed at these prices its a good idea to have one in reserve, as to speeds not seen any difference between the two on my speed tests, unsure as to how you'd generate a speed test on the NOWTV box unless you're talking about the nowtv app running on another device. I agree that the Beeb probably have them on a blacklist and are targeting them specifically.

The PS4 does a speed test every time I set it up which is necessary because it is usually upstairs with my son and I take it to the living room when I want to watch a match.

With smarty dns proxy, have noticed that, if IP address needs validating, access to amazon.co.uk is not possible.
Maybe because amazon are in the business of providing video channels, and s.d.proxy have chosen to include them in their cover, which smarty did not? Just guessing.

That could well have been my problem.
Can now access BBC iPlayer on my Win 10 desktop and access amazon.co.uk without any problem.
Also got access on my LG smart TV.
Looks like well worth paying the yearly subscription.

Gerry,
Are you using Smarty or Smart DNS on your LG TV to receive IPlayer ?

I took a 3 month subscription with SmartDNS and can't see the advantage of switching back to Smarty, but will keep it as a back up if they resolve the BBC iPlayer issue.

Also discovered today that, Jackie Lawson e-card (playing) also needs your IP address to be validated (activated) on Sm.dns.prox.
Coo.

Seems like this service is a bit more wide-ranging (less discriminating) that its rival.
