But if it is not so interesting how do I get rid of it - it keeps looming in the windows update .. will it keep trying to update and waste my gigas, and will it try to upload before other more useful updates?
From your Lifecycle webpage, it looks as though the April one is quite important.

Windows 10 version history Date of availability End of service
Windows 10, version 1803 April 30, 2018 November 12, 2019
Windows 10, version 1709 October 17, 2017 April 9, 2019

I believe it has updated successfully the 1709 so does that mean I am OK until April 9 next year?

Hi Gasman,
1703..........whoops not quite shiny new then.......not as bad as one member that had 1511 and only 32GB disk and no way to upgrade.

In your case a 8GB memory stick and a trip to the library .....have a read of the following......

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... fe9082f925

Basically you will be downloading the .iso file to the memory stick using the Media Creation Tool, and then you can at your leisure upgrade at home.

I tend to do the above as I like to do a "clean" install on my systems.

I'm confused... you Posted 1703 version and now you Post 1709...........

Microsoft will publish security updates for the listed Versions until the Dates mentioned.

For the Home version you will not be able to defer the update (should not download with Metered Connection set), best to get the .iso and update from there.

If as you say it has downloaded already let it run the update without you doing any activity. It takes a few hours with numerous reboots, just have it plugged in to Mains power.

Out of interest, does the latest version of Windows actually offer anything actually beneficial to the average user? If you can actually prevent it from downloading (not easy), will you be any worse off?

Hi Sid,
"Out of interest, does the latest version of Windows actually offer anything actually beneficial to the average user?"

Reading through the Feature updates that have appeared since 1511.........for the average user nothing springs out..........

<If as you say it has downloaded already let it run the update without you doing any activity. It takes a few hours with numerous reboots, just have it plugged in to Mains power.>
But Windows Update says in the History that it has failed to update, even though I saw it get up to the 100 percent, and then start initiating ... So is it there somewhere or not? Should I do restarts to see if it manages to find it somewhere?

I only have a 4 giga USB at present so will have to go out and get an 8 giga from somewhere - not sure the local shop will have them and not due to go into Huelva for a while. The bit about having to change the User Agent on the Browser (Chrome) sounds a bit worrying too ... sorry - not at all a tech geek and would prefer a simple life.
I am with Sid on this - can I just avoid the darned thing?

<.. you Posted 1703 version and now you Post 1709...>
You were right Enrique - the updates, cumulative 2018-06 and -05 that did succees are updated for the version 1703 NOT 1709, also got KB4056254 for 64 based systems.

Ooops Patricia - sorry to hear that ...
Enrique - There is no error code as such, just that in the Windows Update page of Settings, the History shows it as having failed, gives date, not time, and no other indication as to why.
Teamviewer - so you can remotely do some fiddling in my computer? It may well come to that!
Yes, I have already set the active hours to the maximum but not sure about the restart bit.
I put it to bed last night, turned off completely, and just now started it up - rapid re-start this time, and went to Windows Update to check the history - instead of inviting me to DOWNLOAD the 1803, it is inviting me to INSTALL updates - so I clicked on that, and it now says it is "preparing to install updates 0% and the installing bar has appeared, but so far is grey. I will leave wifi off, plug it into the mains, and go off and do some gardening, to return later to view progress .... Wish me luck! .... some 5+ minutes later it is still at 0% .... going to get the clippers from the shed.
(the Update Status part of the window is now no longer showing the 1803 as available, just a cryptic "Updates are available" ....

Sorry about that Enrique - I am on Windows Defender only and have temporarily turned off the antivirus before doing the download.
Why should I connect Wifi - I thought the idea was that it didnt need wifi and was better not being confused? Wifi is still off at present.
The installing is still hobbling along and we are now at 18%.
Perhaps better not to disturb it by looking up Winver - last time it was at 1703. Do you really want me to check NOW?

Hi patricia,
Probably your best bet is to get down to your friendly computer repair store........

As a TIP (of the day)...... :)

Take to using the CLOUD for storing some of your data...........i.e. if you had those Documents on the cloud the other system would be able to access them.

Cloud storage comes free (limited amounts).......Onedrive (5GB), Dropbox (2GB) , Google Drive (15GB) to name a few.

Hi patricia,
Can you try the following..................

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

Let me know if it gets to the Recovery options...thanks
