Hi pensure1988,

The most common reason files do not get successfully defragged is simply that there's not enough free space on the hard disk to do so. The second most common cause is that the file is in use by some program. That's why most defragging utilities suggest you close down all running programs prior to attempting to defrag.

So close outlook express and any other running programs and give it another run thru the defrag program.............

I'd fear that a 17 year old computer has more serious virus and security risks than the issue of hard drive space; she hopefully doesn't do anything financial on it!

I would say my 16+ year old computer is as secure as any new computer.
The age of the computer is irrelevant.
What matters is the age of the software versions and the security software installed on the computer.

If it's a 2002 model Dell then I imagine it is running Windows XP which is full of holes that are actually being exposed by the security patches issued for later versions of Windows. Hackers can reverse engineer these. That's why many antivirus vendors no longer support XP.

Additionally, the only safe way to browse online with XP is to use a browser other than IE8 (the latest supported on XP), and disable Flash, Java and Adobe PDF. Some Spanish government sites love their Java and many open files in PDF, so disabling these is problematic. Also, asking an IT novice to do all this isn't really fair.

So no; if its running Windows and is online, used by an average user, I would still be concerned that even a 'secured' 17 year old PC it isn't as safe as a secured modern one, never mind one that's just trundling along as it always has been.

Good Morning

Thank you everyone for your advice on this subject. I have passed all your comments on to her.

My Friend has not been doing regular maintenance on her Computer hence the Defrag problem. Now it is a major issue which she is trying to address on a Daily Basis. Old people with little computer skills seem not to grasp the importance of deleting very Old Emails going back quite a number of years. Also they seem to want to keep old technology which they fully understand and is user friendly like Windows XP.

Hi pensure1988,
"Also they seem to want to keep old technology which they fully understand and is user friendly like Windows XP."

Not a problem setting a windows 10 system to have a "classic" XP or Windows 7 look........

I run all my systems (Windows ) with Windows 7 look .........its clear and simple.....using Classic Shell
