Desktop computer without wifi

Postby Unicorn » Sun Nov 10, 2019 9:27 pm

Hi there

Does anyone know if I buy a desktop computer that has ethernet but not wifi, do I have to put an antenna on to get wifi to work the wireless printer? If so does any antenna that is for wifi work OK?

Cheers

We had an old dell desktop before coming out. That was only wired connection.so we needed to attach a router to it to get wifi. That worked fine aslong as its "tuned" in properly. First one was but when we got a replacement we had to have some one connect it to the network

Our lenovo units came with a wifi card in them with an antena coming out the back of the pc, just a small thing, 10cm tall.

Unicorn, I think the basic answer to your question is "no." As long as the desktop computer and printer are on the same network (i.e. connecting to the same router) they should be able to 'see' each other, via WiFi in the case of the printer and via Ethernet cable in the case of the computer. This is exactly the setup I have, with my PC connected to the router via a cable and my Brother printer connected to the router via WiFi. I just needed to install the software for the printer and run the setup utility to get everything working.

WiFi printer connections can be difficult (they shouldn’t be but often are). If the printer is near the PC use a USB connection, that always works.

Maybe, but with the printer on wifi you can print to it from other devices, eg tablet when the pc is shut down.

Yes, but you can have both options at the same time. The direct connection ensures that the PC will print. Whether a remote device will print is in the hands of the Gods . Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Hi,
Setting up the Wireless printer with a static IP address.........will take it out of the hands of the Gods......... :D
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
