Skoda Yeti, small, comfortable and good for loads, but 4x4 a tad pricey.

Sid the Pinin was our first car here and it was an excellent off roader, particularly needed for us at the time as our track was long and very muddy. However it was only the 3 door version and we found it just too small. We then had a Focus estate car and actually managed with that for years, even when we were living 4.5kms up a rough track.

I guess we've been spoilt having a 4x4 but the plan is to keep it for bad weather and heavy loads, and so the second car would need to be very small to fit on our driveway. The Picanto, Aygo and Hyundia i10 are all comparable to the Panda according to Whatcar, but we are hoping to pick up an ex hirecar, which our Focus was, which limits the choice. Fiat don't have a good reliability record from what we have been reading, but we are still researching!

Reliability tends to be worse as the car gets bigger with Fiats. Pandas are not a problem car in partic, especially the petrol engines (although the 0.9 turbo twinpot is pretty new. Definitely worth letting it idle before switching off if you've had a difficult climb back home). The 1.3 diesel gets some moans, but it's by far the most manufactured small diesel out there so a larger number of people will have had an issue.

The two problems you might have with an ex hire-car is that (1) they are treated like dirt. The Panda is hired by people wanting to pay as little as possible and probably care less. Ease of engaging first and reverse, state of the clutch and suspension (flying over unexpected bandas sonoras) would be worth checking carefully. The second problem is (when looking from the UK at least) 2WD Pandas were everywhere but I don't remember the 4WD being offered. Maybe inland hire car companies got some in. A possibility, if it's been on the Spanish market, is the Trekking which is 2WD but offers much of the functionality of the 4x4.

The 500L isn't a lot of fun, we found. Very poor handling and visibility. Returned as unacceptable when hired.

Agree. Hertz handed me the (non L) 500 with the foldy roof once. Never driven one, so... Wish I'd handed it back. Cutesy looks don't disguise poor packaging and a fair bit of neck-craning. I looked pretty hard for a Panda 4x4 to hire yesterday and found none. Looking for used examples on Milanuncios, they were all 1.3 diesels, not even the 1.2 (never mind the 0.9) to be seen. The only petrols were the ancient 1st gen. A pity; the 0.9 is a cheaper buy and all the reviews suggest a nicer drive. At the same time, I saw a lot of 'net about the new Jimny not crash-testing very well. I watched the vids, though, and the only slight wincer was the hitting a pole side on. NCAP moves the goalposts every year, but from reading a headline you'd erroneously think you'd be better off in an older car.

Malaga Car hire has a sales department with a 2016 1.2L Panda for sale. Our current car has had a major breakdown and has been in the garage for over 2 weeks so we are wondering whether we may need to replace that in the not too distant future, so that may change things.

Going back to fuel prices some garages on the CDS in June were charging as much as 1.42. They vary vastly like the UK with some robbing motorway station charging 1.38 when other places were as little as 1.23

Drove up the motorway to Cordoba the other day and the prices were less than our local garage!

I read that wholesale prices are lower so could drop 3 or 4 cents. Just in time for any end of month budget increase!

I paid 117 today for diesel, just West of Estepona on A7 which I think is very good.

2 or 3 stations uphill and a bit out of sight in Arroyo de la Miel are 117.9 for the black stuff and 10c more for the 95. One of them is not even an unattended, but the fill-up is done for you by the attendant. I don't pull into the main drag ones any more, as they are around 10c/litre more expensive for the basic fuels.
