Tiny fly, with white wings

Postby oliveview01 » Tue Oct 10, 2017 1:17 pm

And when I say tiny I mean very tiny. We have had loads at night. They leave a red mark if killed. Never seen them before, the door the other night was covered in them.

Cochineal flies. Live by the million on prickly pear clumps - look like a white mould on the plant.

I did wonder if anything to do with prickly pears. The plants along our track are very badly affected by a white fungi, look like the hedge is almost dead. The fungus is spreading on cactus further along track too.

Thanks for the reply Torredelaguila

Yep ditto, just returned home and the evenings there saw hundreds of them flying about, very noticeable especially when they landed on the phone screen. As with other parts of Andalucia all the cacti around our place have died and gone white too.

We're into our second year of those flies. This year they have been less noticeable as a lot of the prickly pears have died due to previous years' infestations. They cover the TV screen at night as they can get through our mozzie nets but I just leave them now as I rather ruined our old TV by trying to wipe them off. The next morning there are loads of dead bodies on the TV table that I can clean up more easily.

We have never had them before, horrible annoying things. Hope they go away soon
