actions to take after a suicide ...

Postby gavilan » Tue Apr 10, 2018 5:37 pm

if one is unlucky enough to find someone has committed suicide ... I assume the first action is to call an ambulance ... who/what then?

The Police would have been my first choice...911,(112 in Spain), let them choose!

Someone near us hung himself, an ambulance was called, but when they arrived they said, “What can we do, he’s dead, call an undertaker”, and left him hanging there!
Sounds pretty callous to us, but it’s just one of the many things that are different here!

I understand that if there is a death at home, i.e not in a hospital, from natural causes or whatever, then the police attend before an undertaker is called.

When we had a family member die up in alicante at home unexpectedly the guardia came with the ambulance. I would think the first call is to the ambulance and then they pass on info to the guardia via control centres etc.

Can your friend not get help.social services etc rather than it been a case of when and not if

According to Wikipedia “Suicide is the main cause of violent death in Spain, causing more deaths than road accidents. In 2010, 3,145 persons committed suicide in Spain”
Around one third of those have been linked to evictions due to the economic crisis, but that still leaves a lot of unexplained suicides, especially in the 15-44 age range.

I thought I would add ... it was a horrible experience and has left me feeling very anxious ... ie if I dont see him around, I wonder where he is/what has he done now? ... I have found your responses so helpful ... and give my most sincere thanks to each of you ... I dont feel quite so alone with it all now ...
