Sherry and Golf, what an evocative combination they make, and now the name has become reality in the form of The Sherry Golf Complex. Situated just 1.5 kilometres
south of the lovely town of Jerez, on the Autovia A-1V. Golf Sherry is typical of the modern American style of courses, wide fairways, big greens, and lots of water.
The entrance to the course is unfortunately through a rather untidy building site but quite surprisingly this does not impact on the course itself (building will all be completed by the end of 2009). No houses overlook the course although a new hotel is being built adjacent to the 18th and will be completed in 2009. Once you arrive at the Hacienda style clubhouse you enter a different world and immediately become aware of the style and tradition of the area that has been crafted into the building, with its high raftered ceilings and galleries that give you a stately welcome.
Out on the first tee your immediate impression is that this is a tough course, with the first fairway climbing up the fairly steep hill and the flag only just visible. In reality only 5 of the holes play uphill and can be considered tough walking. There are 4 tees for each hole (off the white tees 6572 metres and the red tees 4870 metres) allowing players of all handicaps to enjoy a fair challenge, on what is one of the longest courses in Spain. The greens are soft and receptive and are not lightning fast. Some subtle shaping means plenty of concentration is needed to get those pars.
Eight holes are directly affected by water with Golf Sherry’s Amen Corner being one of the toughest tests for all players. From the 13th to the 16th it’s water water everywhere and almost certainly means losing a ball or two. There is guaranteed to be some amusing moments with which to enliven the conversation in the bar afterwards.
Take time to enjoy the views over the fields and vineyards of Jerez and the Bodegas of the sherry houses that stand on the slopes of the town.
Sherry Golf also boasts of a nine hole pitch and putt course adjacent to the large practice ground.
Back in the clubhouse all of the services are superb. The pro shop is well stocked with a good and varied range of clothes and equipment and extremely helpful and patient multilingual staff are on hand to assist. Showers and changing facilities are of a high standard and towels are provided.
The large bar and terrace overlooking the practice ground is open until 9pm each day and serves a range of food from simple tapas to full and varied meals. Why not enjoy a glass of chilled local Fino with your meal.
