Fuente Vaqueros

A visit to Fuente Vaqueros is the perfect way to learn about the life and works of one of its finest exports: the Spanish writer and poet Federico García Lorca. The house where he was born has been converted into a museum. Here you can see the room where he was born and his bedroom, separated from that of his parents by a curtain. Also in the museum are his cradle and three frames containing photos of his childhood, with school friends, and his baptism certificate. Next to this museum, located in the centre of the village, are historical archives where García Lorca’s written documents, recordings and images of his life and works are kept.

There are many other interesting places to visit in Fuente Vaqueros. La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación contains the font where García Lorca was baptised. La Fuente del Agua, the fountain that gives the village its name, is located in the village centre. Lastly, el Molino de la Paz and la Iglesia de la Paz are both located in the area of Fuente Vaqueros known as La Paz. A little more than a kilometre from the village, in the direction of Valderrubio, you can find Pinos Puente and la Casa del Soto de Roma, this palace has exotic trees and gardens and was an estate for hunting and recreation.

The natural environment of Fuente Vaqueros also deserves visitors´ attention. It is located in the Granada lowlands and served by the waters of the river Genil. This area offers a landscape dominated by fruit orchards and vegetable plots as well as large poplar forests.

GASTRONOMY

The fertile lands of Fuente Vaqueros mean that the typical diet of the fuenterinos is dominated by high-quality vegetables. The most typical delicacies are leche pava, (a type of soup made with eggs); los revueltos de espárragos verdes, (scrambled eggs with asparagus); el choto en salsa, (veal in sauce); la sopa de pimiento y tomate, (tomato and pepper soup); papas en gloria, (potato cooked with oil and vinegar); caracoles en salsa, (snails in sauce); los huevos a la nieve, (egg whites) and los roscos de vino, (doughnuts made with wine).

FIESTAS

The calendar of fiestas in Fuente Vaqueros includes traditional celebrations; Romería de San Marcos takes place on 25th of April, and el Día de la Cruz on 3 May. In Fuente Vaqueros they also celebrate the birth of Federico García Lorca; the Fiesta Aniversario del Nacimiento de Federico García Lorca takes place on 5 June. Las Fiestas Populares are in the first week of September and la Fiesta del Patrón on 14 September. Muestra Internacional de Teatro Universitario takes place in May and el Festival de Teatro Popular de Otoño runs for four days in October.

DIRECTIONS

Fuente Vaqueros is 17km from Granada city. Take the A-92, then just in front of Granada Airport take the turning for Chauchina-Fuente Vaqueros, which takes you directly to the village.
