The town of Minas de Rio Tinto has always been based around, and dependent on, the mines themselves which give it its name. Minas de Rio Tinto reached its peak of prosperity and importance in the late 19th and early 20th century, when the minies were in full productioin and the towns population was 200.000. Today it is 4.000. The town itself is built on rolling hills, covered by pine and eucalyptus trees planted by the British for use in the mines.
