The town of San Nicolas del Puerto is another one of the province’s natural havens. On town’s outskirts, which make up part of the Sierra Norte nature park, there are two beautiful enclaves that have been declared natural monuments: The first is known as Cascadas del Huesna and is on the middle channel of the river within a forest of willow, elm and ash trees. The second is the Cerro del Hierro where there is a mix of the typically impressive rocky landscape with a beautiful forest. Because there is an interesting variety of animal species to see, for example, there are vultures, eagles and storks to name a few. This area is also known to be a good for rock climbing and potholing. Other places of interest in San Nicolas del Puerto are the Tobales caves and the artificial beach at the Cerro del Hierro.
